Superman - Black Suit

Figure ID

sh077

Theme

Super Heroes

Year Released

2013: Released as an exclusive promotional giveaway at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC).

Rarity

Ultra-rare: This was a limited-edition promotional figure with an estimated production run of only 200 units worldwide.

Head

Double-sided Flesh head: one side carries a determined/neutral expression with high cheekbones, the other showing 'heat vision' red eyes. It uses the wavy black hair piece (part 95226).

Torso

Dark Blue (appearing almost black) torso with a unique silver/grey chainmail texture and the iconic 'S' shield in muted red and gold. Features back printing of the suit texture.

Legs

Dark Blue legs with continuation of the silver suit texture printing on the front of the hips and legs. No side printing.

Accessories

Red soft-fabric cape. It did not come with hand-held accessories but was originally packaged on a blister card.

Color Scheme

Dark Blue (Black look), Dark Red, and Silver. This 'black suit' aesthetic was inspired by the Man of Steel movie aesthetics.

Printing Details

High-quality pad printing with fine metallic silver lines to represent the Kryptonian mesh suit. Print covers the head, torso (front/back), and leg fronts.

Variants

This is the 'Black Suit' variant. Other 2013 versions include the standard blue suit (sh073) and the even rarer Zod-disguise version.

Condition Notes

The cape is prone to fraying at the edges. Since this was often a high-value collector item, check for neck cracks or torso stress marks. High susceptibility to counterfeiting; check for the LEGO logo on all studs and between the legs.

Estimated Value

Used: $3,000 - $4,500; New/In Blister: $5,500 - $8,000+. Values fluctuate based on verified authenticity.

Price (New)

N/A: This was distributed for free via a lottery system at San Diego Comic-Con 2013.

Compatible Sets

Not included in any retail sets; exclusive to San Diego Comic-Con 2013 Promotional Giveaway.

Character Background

Based on the recovery suit (or Solar Suit) from DC Comics, though styled specifically to match the aesthetic of Henry Cavill’s Superman in the Zack Snyder films.

Design Notes

First time Superman was officially produced in this color palette. The printing was much more intricate than the standard 2012 DC line.

Similar Minifigures

Superman (sh003), Superman - Man of Steel (sh073), and the 2011 NYCC Exclusive Superman.

Collectibility

Extremely high. It is considered a 'Holy Grail' piece for DC Super Heroes collectors and a Tier-1 investment piece.

History

Released during the height of the Man of Steel film promotion. It marked one of the first times LEGO used SDCC for a major film-tie-in variant that wasn't a comic-book design.

Interesting Facts

The figure was given away in a plastic clamshell with a backing card that featured a unique identification number for some versions. It remains one of the most faked minifigures on the secondary market.

Display Suggestions

Should be kept in a UV-protected acrylic case. To showcase its exclusivity, display it alongside the SDCC General Zod figure from the same year.

Modification Potential

Low: Due to its extreme value, any modification or part swapping (other than the cape) significantly devalues the figure.

Overall Assessment

10/10 Rarity/Desirability. It is a masterpiece of early 2010s promotional design and a cornerstone of elite LEGO collecting.
