Lloyd Garmadon - The Golden Ninja (Legacy)

Figure ID

njo498

Theme

Ninjago

Year Released

2019 (January release) - Part of the first wave of Ninjago 'Legacy' sets which reimagined classic characters and vehicles from the early seasons of the show.

Rarity

Uncommon. While not a limited-edition chase figure, it was exclusive to a single medium-priced set at launch, making it slightly harder to find than standard ninja variations.

Head

Pearl Gold Ninja Wrap (Mask part 37274) with a yellow head underneath. The head features Lloyd's signature green eyes, a determined expression with furrowed brows, and a dual-sided print with a more aggressive/angry battle expression.

Torso

Pearl Gold torso with front and back printing. Design features a dark green sash (V-neck style) with metallic gold trim, two circular badges on the upper chest, and dark green/teal accents. The printing quality is high-resolution pad printing typical of the Legacy era.

Legs

Pearl Gold legs and hips. Front leg printing features the continuation of the green sash/wrap, golden dragon-silk patterns, and intricate bandage/wrap details around the shins in a tan/gold color.

Accessories

Includes a Pearl Gold armor piece over the shoulders with two Katana holsters. It is equipped with two Pearl Gold Katanas and the 'Golden Sword of Dragon' (scimitar-style blade). The armor is piece 37614.

Color Scheme

Primary color is Pearl Gold. Accent colors include Dark Green, Black, and Tan. This monochromatic gold look represents Lloyd's 'Ultimate Spinjitzu Master' form.

Printing Details

Highly detailed pad printing on the torso (front and back) and the front of the legs. The alignment is generally excellent, reflecting the 2019-2020 production standards. The metallic gold ink on the sash provides a nice contrast against the pearl gold plastic.

Variants

There are several 'Golden Lloyd' variants. The original (njo073) from 2013 has different printing. A 10th-anniversary version (njo635) has a flat gold base and '10 Years' printing on the back. This specific version is the 2019 'Legacy' sculpt.

Condition Notes

Pearl Gold plastic is prone to showing 'swirl marks' from the molding process. Vulnerable to scratches on the gold finish and stress marks on the side of the torso (arm sockets) and the heels. Dust shows up prominently on the metallic surface.

Estimated Value

Used: $8.00 - $12.00 | New/Mint: $15.00 - $20.00. Value remains stable due to Lloyd's popularity as the lead protagonist.

Price (New)

Originally available in set 70666 'The Golden Dragon' which retailed for $19.99 USD. The figure represented roughly 50% of the set's desirable value to collectors.

Compatible Sets

70666-1 (The Golden Dragon), 951901 (Ninjago Magazine Gift), and various European foil packs/blister packs.

Character Background

Lloyd Montgomery Garmadon, the son of Lord Garmadon. This figure represents the moment he unlocked his full potential as the Golden Ninja, the prophesied savior of Ninjago and master of the Golden Power.

Design Notes

Uses the updated 'Legacy' mask mold which is two pieces (though often shown as one). The design is a refined version of the 2013 original, adding much more texture to the fabric printing on the legs and torso.

Similar Minifigures

Original Golden Ninja (njo073), 10th Anniversary Golden Lloyd (njo635), and Golden Oni Lloyd (njo793).

Collectibility

High. Lloyd is the most popular character in the franchise, and the Golden Ninja form is his most iconic 'power-up' state. It is a staple for any Ninjago collection.

History

First appearing in the 'Final Battle' season (Season 2), the Golden Ninja stayed in the vault of LEGO designs for years until the Legacy line revived it with improved molding and printing techniques in 2019.

Interesting Facts

The 'Pearl Gold' plastic used for this figure is slightly more durable than the 'Chrome Gold' used on older rare LEGO items, which tended to flake and peel over time.

Display Suggestions

Best displayed on a transparent stand to simulate flying or atop a brick-built dragon. Direct sunlight must be avoided to prevent the yellow head piece from fading behind the mask.

Modification Potential

The pearl gold parts are highly sought after for 'Golden Knights' MOCs or custom fantasy warriors. The armor piece is frequently used in custom superhero builds.

Overall Assessment

An essential Ninjago figure. It offers great value-for-money, featuring beautiful metallic finishes and high-detail printing for a relatively low secondary market price. A 'Buy' for any fan of the show.
