Year Released
2014. It debuted in set 76011 Batman: Man-Bat Attack, released during a period when LEGO was expanding the DC roster beyond Batman and Joker to include the broader Bat-family.
Rarity
Uncommon. While it only appeared in one retail set and one specialized collection, the set was relatively affordable and widely distributed at the time.
Head
Light Flesh color with a dual-sided print. One side features a smirk with a black domino mask and red eyes; the other features an angry/gritting teeth expression. It is topped with a black short spiky hair piece (part 98385).
Torso
Black torso with front and back printing. The front features the iconic large red bird/V-shape logo with light bluish gray muscle contouring. The back features the continuation of the red logo and muscle lines.
Legs
Plain black legs without printing. These are standard 3678/3679 leg assemblies.
Accessories
In its original set, it came with two trans-blue lightsaber bars used as Escrima sticks. The figure in the image is missing these accessories.
Color Scheme
A striking black and red palette, which represents Dick Grayson’s New 52 comic book costume era (2011-2014), departing from the traditional blue and black.
Printing Details
High-quality pad printing on the head and torso. The red ink is opaque and vibrant against the black plastic, and the grey muscle lines are crisp. There is no printing on the arms or legs.
Variants
This is the 'New 52' red version. Other variants include the original blue version (sh015) and later versions with different hair or logo styles like the 2020 version (sh622).
Condition Notes
The neck area and sides of the torso are prone to vertical hairline cracks. The black plastic shows scratches easily. The red printing on the torso can sometimes suffer from 'translucency' where the black plastic peeks through if not printed thickly enough.
Estimated Value
Used: $8.00 - $12.00 USD. New (extracted): $15.00 - $20.00 USD. Value is stable but lower than the blue variants which are often more in demand for classic displays.
Price (New)
Originally available in set 76011 for a retail price of $19.99 USD, which included 184 pieces and two other minifigures (Batman and Man-Bat).
Compatible Sets
76011 Batman: Man-Bat Attack (2014) and 66482 Super Heroes 3-in-1 Super Pack (2014).
Character Background
Dick Grayson, the original Robin, transitioned to the identity of Nightwing to lead his own path away from Batman. This red suit specifically references the DC 'New 52' reboot continuity where his primary accent color changed from blue to red.
Design Notes
This figure marked a departure from the classic blue Nightwing. The hair piece was a relatively new mold at the time and perfectly captured the character's 'bad boy' aesthetic from the comics.
Similar Minifigures
Nightwing - Blue Bird Logo (sh015), Nightwing - Blue Logo, Yellow Eyes (sh622), and Robin (sh011).
Collectibility
Moderate. It is a essential for collectors of the Bat-family or those aiming for a complete 'New 52' era Justice League lineup. Demand is consistent due to Nightwing's general popularity.
History
Followed the 2012 blue Nightwing. Since this release, LEGO has predominantly returned to the blue color scheme for the character, making this red version a distinct era-specific piece.
Interesting Facts
The red eyes in the mask are intended to simulate the tactical lenses seen in the comics. This is one of the few Nightwing figures to use this specific hair mold, which is also used for many versions of Robin.
Display Suggestions
Best displayed with the 2012-2014 era Batman figures. Using trans-blue or trans-red bars as Escrima sticks in a dynamic pose on a transparent stand enhances the 'acrobatic' look of the character.
Modification Potential
The head and hair are frequently used by customizers to create other youthful male characters. The torso can be swapped with blue-printed arms for a custom 'hybrid' look.
Overall Assessment
A solid, well-printed minifigure that accurately captures a specific comic book era. While it lacks the leg printing found on modern figures, the torso design remains one of the best Nightwing representations LEGO has produced.
