Theme

Year Released

1994 (debut year for the Spyrius line)

Rarity

Common to Uncommon. While it appeared in several sets in the mid-90s, finding one in mint condition with a scratch-free trans-red visor is becoming increasingly difficult for collectors.

Head

Yellow classic minifigure head with a standard smiley face (or standard facial print), covered by a Light Gray Space Helmet featuring a Trans-Red Visor.

Torso

Light Gray torso with 'Spyrius' robot pattern printing. Features a mechanical chest plate design with a red logo on a black background, black mechanical lines, and a printed utility belt with a white pouch on the right side. Plain light gray arms with black hands.

Legs

Light Gray legs with black and white mechanical hip/leg printing. The printing includes mechanical knee joints and vent-like structures at the bottom of the shins.

Accessories

The figure is pictured with its iconic Light Gray Space Helmet and Trans-Red Visor. In sets, it was often equipped with various Space tools such as binoculars, black blasters, or mechanical arms on robots.

Color Scheme

Primary color is Light Gray, accented by Black, White, and Trans-Red. This industrial, monochromatic look was intended to distinguish the 'villainous' Spyrius or droid faction from the more colorful Ice Planet 2002 or Unitron lines.

Printing Details

Pad printing on the torso (front only) and legs (front only). Detail is sharp, typical of the 1990s era, featuring high-contrast black and white lines to simulate mechanical textures. Lack of back printing is standard for this period.

Variants

There are no major official variants of the sp001, though some sets paired the torso/leg assembly with different headpieces or helmet configurations in MOCs. This specific figure is the standard 1994 version.

Condition Notes

Visors are prone to scratching and lose their 'clutch' over time, causing them to fall off. The Light Gray plastic is susceptible to yellowing if exposed to UV light. Check for 'heel cracks' on the back of the legs and torso side cracks near the armpits.

Estimated Value

Used: $4.00 - $8.00 USD; New (taken from sealed box): $12.00 - $18.00 USD. Prices fluctuate based on the clarity of the red visor.

Price (New)

N/A (Individual figure was not sold separately). The cheapest set it appeared in was the 6835 Pawlow for approximately $5.00 in 1994.

Compatible Sets

6889 Recon Robot, 6939 Saurian Scout, 6949 Robo-Guardian, 6959 Lunar Launch Site, 6835 Pawlow.

Character Background

In the LEGO Space lore of the 1990s, Spyrius was a faction of tech-thieves and raiders known for building massive robots. This droid served as the mechanical grunt/pilot for their fleet, often depicted operating their large-scale mechs to steal technology from other factions like Unitron.

Design Notes

One of the earliest examples of detailed 'robotic' leg printing in LEGO Space. The trans-red visor attached to the classic helmet mold created a 'menacing' futuristic look that defined the Spyrius aesthetic.

Similar Minifigures

Spyrius Chief (sp002), various Unitron astronauts, and later robot figures like the Life on Mars mechs or the Series 6 Clockwork Robot.

Collectibility

High nostalgia value for '90s kids. While not the most expensive figure, it is essential for completing a Classic Space collection and is a staple of the mid-90s 'Golden Era' of LEGO Space.

History

Spyrius was the second faction (after Blacktron) perceived as the antagonists of the LEGO Space world. This droid represented LEGO’s shift toward more intricate, mechanical character designs compared to the simple suits of the 70s and 80s.

Interesting Facts

The torso logo is often interpreted as a robotic 'eye' or core. This figure appeared in the most 'robocentric' wave LEGO had ever produced up to that point, including the massive 6949 Robo-Guardian.

Display Suggestions

Best displayed alongside a Spyrius Recon Robot or inside the cockpit of a Robo-Guardian. Use a black or dark baseplate to make the Light Gray and Trans-Red pop.

Modification Potential

The mechanical leg printing makes these legs popular for 'cyberpunk' or 'Star Wars' droid MOCs. The torso is frequently used for custom industrial robot builds.

Overall Assessment

A quintessential 90s LEGO Space figure. While common, its iconic design and the 'cool factor' of the trans-red visor make it a must-have for any vintage Space enthusiast. Quality: 8/10, Collectibility: 7/10.
