A-Wing Pilot (Dutch Vander variant / Generic Rebel Pilot)

Figure ID

sw0031

Theme

Star Wars

Year Released

2000 (First release context: Set 7134 A-wing Fighter)

Rarity

Uncommon. While mass-produced in the early 2000s, this older variant is increasingly harder to find in mint condition due to its age and the fragile nature of older black visors.

Head

Classic yellow head with simple smiley face printing (two black eyes and a mouth curve). It is covered by a black rebel pilot helmet with an integrated visor mold (Part 30283).

Torso

Red torso with printing of a white life support vest, grey control box/panels, and orange straps. The design is a simplified 'Classic' style used between 1999-2003. Back printing is non-existent as was standard for that era.

Legs

Plain unprinted red legs with a red hip piece.

Accessories

Black megaphones were used as blasters in this era (Part 4349). This specific image shows a slightly more modern small blaster pistol (Part 58247) which may be a replacement or from a later set.

Color Scheme

Red, orange, and white primary colors with black headgear and black hands. This reflects the standard color-coding for A-Wing pilots in the Star Wars universe.

Printing Details

Simple pad printing on the front of the torso only. The alignment is generally centered but lacks the high-fidelity detail, metallic inks, or leg/arm printing found in modern LEGO Star Wars minifigures.

Variants

Standard sw0031 has red legs; sw0023 is a similar B-Wing pilot with grey legs. Later versions (sw0437, sw1093) feature flesh tones, detailed helmets, and printed flight suits.

Condition Notes

Watch for 'bit marks' on the helmet and megaphone/blaster. The red torso printing is prone to surface scratching. Check for side-cracks on the torso and heel cracks on the legs.

Estimated Value

$5.00 - $9.00 USD for used complete; $12.00+ for new/unassembled. Value is largely nostalgic as it is an early 2000s figure.

Price (New)

Originally included in set 7134 which retailed for $15.00 USD in 2000.

Compatible Sets

7134 A-wing Fighter (2000), 4484 X-wing Fighter & TIE Advanced (2003 - Mini version), 65081 Star Wars Co-Pack (2002).

Character Background

Represents the pilots of the RZ-1 A-wing interceptor used by the Rebel Alliance, notably seen during the Battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi.

Design Notes

Uses the iconic 'one-piece' pilot helmet mold which dominated the first decade of Star Wars LEGO. This particular mold is sought after by 'Classic' collectors for its nostalgic silhouette.

Similar Minifigures

sw0036 (B-Wing Pilot), sw0009 (Biggs Darklighter/Rebel Pilot), sw0011 (Darth Vader - Classic Greyscale torso).

Collectibility

Moderate. It is essential for collectors of 'Classic Era' Star Wars (1999-2003). It is less desirable to collectors who prefer film-accurate modern details.

History

This figure marks the transition from the earliest wave of 1999 sets into the expanded vehicle roster of 2000. It was the only way to get a red flight suit pilot for several years.

Interesting Facts

In early LEGO Star Wars video games, these red-suited pilots were often the default playable 'Rebel' characters. The black megaphone accessory in the set was often used as both a weapon and an engine part.

Display Suggestions

Best displayed alongside the classic 7134 A-Wing or on a stand with other 'Yellow-face' era Star Wars characters to maintain aesthetic consistency.

Modification Potential

High for 'Purist MOCs'. The red torso is frequently repurposed by fans to build custom Imperial Guards or technicians from the 70s/80s space aesthetic.

Overall Assessment

A quintessential 'Classic' LEGO Star Wars figure. While it lacks modern sophistication, its charm lies in its simplicity. Quality: 7/10 (for its era). Collector Demand: 6/10.
