Figure ID
hp009
Theme
Harry Potter
Year Released
2001 (Original debut in set 4707)
Rarity
Uncommon to Rare. While mass-produced in the early 2000s, finding them in good condition is difficult due to the fragility of the hand clips and torso plastic.
Head
Classic yellow skin tone. Small dot eyes with thick black eyebrows. The face is mostly obscured by the massive hair/beard piece, which is a single molded component in black.
Torso
Unique large-scale mold. Dark brown primarily, representing his overcoat. Printing includes a reddish-brown vest detail with a large black belt and silver buckle. Arms are oversized compared to standard minifigures.
Legs
Non-articulated 2x2 brick-width base. Dark brown color, molded as a single static piece that fits into standard LEGO studs but cannot walk like a standard minifigure.
Accessories
Typically paired with a pink umbrella (top-secret wand) and a brown lantern. This specific photo does not show the accessories.
Color Scheme
Earth tones: Dark Brown, Reddish Brown, and Black, contrasted with the classic LEGO Yellow of the face.
Printing Details
Simple pad printing on the chest area only. The lines are thick and typical of the early 2000s production standards. No back printing was present on this era of Hagrid.
Variants
The most notable variant is hp063 (Light Flesh), which replaced this yellow version in 2004. There is also a version with a light-molded coat (hp009c).
Condition Notes
Common wear includes 'clicking' or stress marks on the hands/wrists. The torso is prone to scratches on the smooth brown surface. Look for fading on the belt buckle print.
Estimated Value
Used: $8 - $15 USD. New/Mint: $25 - $40 USD. Value is heavily dictated by the absence of cracks in the torso or arms.
Price (New)
Originally released in sets ranging from $10.00 (4701) to $70.00 (4709).
Compatible Sets
4701 Sorting Hat, 4707 Hagrid's Hut, 4709 Hogwarts Castle, 4714 Gringotts Bank.
Character Background
Rubeus Hagrid is the Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts. Being a half-giant, LEGO designed this unique larger scale to distinguish him from student minifigures.
Design Notes
This was one of LEGO's earliest 'Big-Figs' or mid-scale figures. It uses a unique torso and leg assembly that is incompatible with standard minifigure clothing but uses standard hands.
Similar Minifigures
hp063 (Flesh Hagrid), hp111 (2010 Hagrid), hp144 (2018 Modern Hagrid). Similar large-scale figures include early Goblins or Wulffwarro.
Collectibility
High for nostalgia seekers. Collectors of the 'Yellow Era' Harry Potter sets consider this a cornerstone figure of the original wave.
History
Launched with the first LEGO Harry Potter wave in 2001. It marked LEGO's commitment to making licensed characters movie-accurate in stature, even before 'Big-figs' were common.
Interesting Facts
The beard piece is so large it prevents the head from turning. This figure is one of the few instances where LEGO used a 2-wide static leg piece for a primary character.
Display Suggestions
Display alongside the original 2001 Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. Looks best in front of the classic 4707 Hagrid's Hut.
Modification Potential
Low due to the unique mold. Only the hands and the head can be easily swapped with other figures.
Overall Assessment
An iconic piece of LEGO history. While the printing is primitive by today's standards, the silhouette is unmistakable and it remains a must-have for Harry Potter completionists.
