Rise of the Snakes · 2012 (First release in set 9444)

Figure ID
njo035
Theme
Ninjago
Year Released
2012 (First release in set 9444)
Rarity
Uncommon to Rare. While Skales was the leader of the Hypnobrai, he only appeared in two sets and one spinner pack during the original 2012 wave, making him one of the more sought-after serpentine generals.
Head
Unique molded Sand Blue head piece representing a cobra hood. Features red eyes and dark blue/black hypnotic patterns. It extends down as a single piece rather than a traditional head and hair combo.
Torso
Sand Blue torso with Hypnobrai scale pattern. The front features a tan/yellowish chest plate with a brown strap running diagonally. The back features continued scale printing. Arms are Sand Blue with black hands.
Legs
Sand Blue legs with printing that continues the Hypnobrai scale aesthetic and gold/tan ornamental knee armor. Hip piece is Sand Blue.
Accessories
The figure in the image is wearing a blue bandana (neck piece), which is not part of the standard Skales (njo035) assembly. Originally, he came with a golden Hypnobrai staff or a golden snake.
Color Scheme
Primary color is Sand Blue, with accent colors of Dark Blue, Gold, Tan, and Red (eyes).
Printing Details
High-quality pad printing typical of the 2012 era. Coverage includes torso front/back and leg front. The head mold features intricate eye and scale printing that is highly durable.
Variants
There are no major official variants of the njo035 version, though a 'Legacy' version with slightly updated printing exists. The figure in the photo is a custom 'mash-up' due to the inclusion of the blue bandana.
Condition Notes
Common wear points include the rubbery tip of the snake tail (if using the tail piece instead of legs) and friction wear on the neck post. The printing on the torso is generally resilient, but the gold on the legs can rub off over time.
Estimated Value
Used: $15 - $25 USD. New/Mint: $35+. The value fluctuates based on whether the original golden staff is included. The version in the photo (with a bandana and standard legs) is worth approximately $18.
Price (New)
Originally available in set 9444 Cole's Tread Assault ($29.99) and 9446 Destiny's Bounty ($79.99).
Compatible Sets
9444 Cole's Tread Assault, 9446 Destiny's Bounty, and 9575 Skales (Spinner set).
Character Background
Skales is the General of the Hypnobrai tribe. He famously overthrew Slithraa to become the leader and later served as a primary antagonist before turning to a more neutral/peaceful life in later Ninjago seasons.
Design Notes
Skales utilizes an exclusive 'snake head' mold that was revolutionary in 2012 for the Ninjago line, moving away from standard minifigure heads to create distinct reptilian silhouettes.
Similar Minifigures
Slithraa (njo037), Rattla (njo033), Mezmo (njo034), and Byron (njo040).
Collectibility
High. The 2012 Serpentine generals are a cornerstone of Ninjago collecting, often representing the 'nostalgia era' for many fans of the series.
History
Skales was part of the very first wave of Serpentine villains. He marked the transition of Ninjago from Skeleton enemies to the more diverse and uniquely molded elemental animal tribes.
Interesting Facts
The Hypnobrai pattern on his head is meant to simulate the 'trance' effect. In the TV show, his neck is much longer, but for the minifigure, LEGO opted for a standard torso to maintain playability with vehicles.
Display Suggestions
Display alongside the other four Serpentine Generals (Fangtom, Skalidor, Pythor, Acidicus) or inside the 9446 Destiny's Bounty bridge.
Modification Potential
Excellent; the head mold is a favorite for MOC-builders creating lizard-men or dragon-kin characters. The figure in the image already uses a blue bandana mod.
Overall Assessment
A classic Ninjago villain that holds its value well. While the figure in the photo is slightly modified with a bandana, the core components (Head, Torso, Legs) appear to be authentic LEGO and in good condition.
