Year Released
2000. This year marked the transition from the classic '90s aesthetic to the highly detailed and often chrome-accented designs of the early 2000s.
Rarity
Uncommon to Rare. While the King appeared in several sets, the version with the black cloth cape and chrome gold crown is highly sought after by collectors of the Knights Kingdom era.
Head
Standard yellow skin tone with black eyebrows, a classic thick black mustache, and a soul patch. He features reddish-brown mid-length hair specifically molded to fit the included crown.
Torso
Light Gray with blue and white tabard printing involving a Blue Lion crest. The torso includes silver metallic armor printing and a black belt with a gold buckle. Arms are light gray; hands are dark gray.
Legs
Light gray legs with detailed printing that continues the tabard design, including silver chainmail patterns and gold decorative scalloped edges at the bottom.
Accessories
Includes a Pearl Gold Crown (small) and a black cloth cape. In original sets, he often carried a chrome silver sword and a rounded shield with the Lion logo.
Color Scheme
Primary colors are Light Gray, Blue, and White. Accents include Chrome Gold (for the crown) and Black (for the cape and printing details).
Printing Details
Highly detailed for its era, featuring intricate chainmail and 'padded' fabric lines on both the torso and the legs. The printing is pad-printed with excellent alignment on the front surface.
Variants
There are versions with and without the cape. A similar mold exists in the King Leo 'Bully' variant from the soccer sets, but this (cas070) is the official Castle world version.
Condition Notes
Chrome gold on the crown is highly susceptible to flaking and wear. The black cloth cape can fray at the edges. Check for torso cracks and neck-pin stress marks.
Estimated Value
Used (Complete with cape): $15—$25 USD. New/Mint condition: $40+ USD. The crown alone can be worth $5—$8 if the chrome is perfect.
Price (New)
Originally available in sets ranging from the King's Castle ($90) down to the small King's Carriage ($6). Value has significantly appreciated above the original 'price per brick' ratio.
Compatible Sets
6098 King Leo's Castle, 6091 King Leo's Castle (Value Pack), 6095 Royal Joust, 4806 Axe Cart, 10176 Royal King's Castle (2006 re-release version).
Character Background
King Leo is the benevolent monarch of the Lion Kingdom. He leads his knights against Cedric the Bull. He is a primary protagonist in the early 2000s LEGO Castle lore.
Design Notes
The use of the specialized hair/crown combo was a significant departure from the 'one-piece' crowns used in the 1990s Royal Knights sub-theme.
Similar Minifigures
King Matthias (Knights Kingdom II), Royal King (1995), King Richard (Lion Knights), and Princess Storm.
Collectibility
High. He is the centerpiece of the Knights Kingdom I lineup and holds a great deal of nostalgia for collectors who grew up during the millennium transition.
History
He represents the first time a named King was central to a LEGO Castle narrative before the theme became more character-driven in later years.
Interesting Facts
The King Leo figure also appeared in the LEGO Island 2 and LEGO Racers 2 video games as a major NPC/racer character.
Display Suggestions
Place him on a raised 2x2 brick 'throne' behind his knights. Use a display case that protects the chrome crown from acidic finger oils and UV light.
Modification Potential
The torso and legs are excellent for 'Purist' MOCs of high-ranking medieval officials or paladins due to the neutral light gray and blue palette.
Overall Assessment
A quintessential piece of LEGO Castle history. The combination of chrome elements and detailed leg printing makes this a standout figure from the early 21st century.
