Rock Raiders
Year Released
1999 (First Wave)
Rarity
Uncommon. While common in 1999, original Rock Raiders figures are becoming increasingly difficult to find in good condition due to their age and set playability.
Head
Yellow classic base, single-sided print featuring orange-tinted circular glasses/shades with thin wire frames and a smirking mouth with one raised eyebrow.
Torso
Dark Stone Grey with Yellow arms and Black hands. Front printing shows a complex mining suit with a white collar, silver/dark red mechanical harness, and a yellow utility belt containing four pouches.
Legs
Light Stone Grey with detailed printing. Features a yellow gauge/dial on the right leg and a red circular logo (Trident-style) on the left leg, with white/grey 'dirt/dust' patterns at the feet.
Accessories
Missing in image. Originally included a Black Minifigure Headgear Cap (Short Bill) and often paired with a drill, pickaxe, or circular saw depending on the set.
Color Scheme
A utilitarian mix of Light and Dark Stone Grey, Yellow, and highlights of Dark Red and White.
Printing Details
High quality for the late 90s era. Features extensive mechanical details on both the torso and the fronts of the legs, though no arm or back printing was standard for this wave.
Variants
Axle has two primary versions: the standard (rr011) and a version without the headgear cap (rr001). Some later releases in polybags used slightly different part combinations.
Condition Notes
Susceptible to fading on the torso print and 'cracking' at the arm sockets. The yellow arms are prone to discoloration if exposed to UV light.
Estimated Value
New/Sealed: $15-$20. Used Complete: $5-$10. Used Incomplete (as shown): $3-$6.
Price (New)
N/A individually; primarily available in sets ranging from $3.00 (polybags) to $100.00 (L.C.V. 4990).
Compatible Sets
4990 The Rock Raiders HQ, 4980 The Tunnel Transport, 4950 The Loader-Dozer, 4930 The Rock Raiders Crew.
Character Background
Axle is the master pilot and driver of the Rock Raiders team. He is known for his cool-headedness and ability to navigate the dangerous underground caverns of Planet U.
Design Notes
Represents the 'Second Golden Age' of LEGO space/exploration design where prints became significantly more industrial and detailed compared to the early 90s.
Similar Minifigures
Bandit, Docs, Jet, and Chief from the Rock Raiders line. Also similar to early Power Miners (2009) figures.
Collectibility
High for collectors of 90s nostalgia. Rock Raiders has a cult following due to the popular PC video game associated with the theme.
History
Rock Raiders was LEGO's attempt to bridge the gap between Space and a realistic mining aesthetic. It was eventually succeeded by the Power Miners theme years later.
Interesting Facts
The 'Axle' face print was later reused for many generic 'cool guy' characters in City and early Town sets due to its versatile expression.
Display Suggestions
Best displayed inside the 4950 Loader-Dozer or alongside a chrome-silver rock crystal element common to the theme.
Modification Potential
Excellent for 'Dieselpunk' or post-apocalyptic MOCs. The torso/leg prints are perfect for scavenger or industrial worker characters.
Overall Assessment
A quintessential piece of LEGO history from 1999. While this specific unit is missing its hat, it remains a highly desirable figure for fans of the 'Planet U' lore.
