Theme
Ninjago
Year Released
2017 - Debuted in the set 70621 The Vermillion Attack during the wave based on the season 7 animated series.
Rarity
Common. This figure was widely available in an inexpensive entry-level set and a polybag, making it one of the most accessible Kai variants from that era.
Head
Yellow face with angry eyebrows, red scar over his left eye, and a determined expression. It includes the Dual-Molded Red/Black mask piece (Part# 27255) which shows the hair molded into the headgear.
Torso
Dark Red/Red torso with dark red sleeves and black hands. Printing features a red robe with dark red belts, a gold 'Lion' elemental emblem, and silver buckles on the front and back.
Legs
Red legs with red hips. Printing includes dark red belt ends hanging down the front, dark red straps with silver buckles on both shins.
Accessories
Missing in image. Originally came with two Trans-Neon Orange Katanas and sometimes a 'Slow-Mo' Time Blade (Trans-Blue) depending on the set distribution.
Color Scheme
Predominantly Red and Dark Red with Black and Silver accents. This reflects Kai's transition into more complex dual-tone outfits seen in later season designs.
Printing Details
High-quality pad printing on the torso (front and back) and the front of the legs. The emblem is cleanly rendered in metallic gold. There is no arm or side-leg printing.
Variants
This specifically lacks the 'Tactical' armor piece found in more expensive sets of the same wave. Other variants of Kai from 2017 include the Kimono version (LLOYD'S set) and the Fusion version.
Condition Notes
Prone to hairline cracks on the torso sides (under arms) and friction wear on the silver buckle prints. The red plastic is generally durable and resistant to yellowing.
Estimated Value
$3.00 - $6.00 USD for used condition. Complete with original swords, it can reach $8.00 USD. New/Sealed in polybag versions (30427) are roughly $10.00 - $12.00 USD.
Price (New)
$9.99 for set 70621 (which included 3 figures, making the individual value roughly $3.33 at retail).
Compatible Sets
70621 The Vermillion Attack, 30427 Ice Tank (Polybag bonus), and 111701 (Ninjago Magazine Gift).
Character Background
Kai is the Master of Fire. In the 'Hands of Time' season, he and his sister Nya are central protagonists as they discover the truth about their parents while fighting the Time Twins, Krux and Acronix.
Design Notes
The dual-molded mask/hair piece was a major innovation for Ninjago in 2017, allowing for a more 'cinematic' look that bridged the gap between the show's animation and the physical toys.
Similar Minifigures
njo285 (Kai - Kimono), njo297 (Kai - Fusion), and other Fire-themed Ninjas from the 'Day of the Departed' or 'Sons of Garmadon' lines.
Collectibility
Moderate. While common, Kai is the most popular character for many young collectors. This version is essential for completing the 'Hands of Time' roster but isn't a high-value investment piece.
History
This represented a shift toward more 'realistic' ninja gear. Kai's design became more 'rugged' in this era before the 2018 'The LEGO Ninjago Movie' overhaul changed character appearances significantly.
Interesting Facts
The Lion emblem on his chest is a legacy callback to the original 2011 armor, but updated for a modern aesthetic. This figure appeared in a record number of promotional foil packs in Europe.
Display Suggestions
Best displayed with the other four Ninja in their 'Hands of Time' robes or placed within the Vermillion Swamp scenery from the corresponding sets. Use a clear 1x2 brick to elevate him for a mid-air strike pose.
Modification Potential
The head and mask piece are frequently used for MOCs (My Own Creations) regarding red-themed superhero customs or futuristic pilots.
Overall Assessment
A solid, well-detailed representation of a fan-favorite character. It is an affordable entry point for Ninjago collectors and accurately captures the season 7 aesthetic.
