Obi-Wan Kenobi - Dark Orange Hair, Comlink Head

Figure ID

sw0489

Theme

Star Wars

Year Released

2013 (First appearance in 75012 BARC Speeder with Sidecar)

Rarity

Uncommon. While not a limited promotional figure, it only appeared in two sets and features a specific head print that makes it desirable for prequel-era collectors.

Head

Light Flesh, dual-sided with Comlink (headset) print. One side features a focused/serious expression, the other a grimacing/determined expression. It features a medium-sized beard and brown eyebrows.

Torso

Dark Brown Jedi Robe with Dark Tan Tunic, reddish-brown belt, and dark tan neck detailing. Rear printing continues the robe and belt line. Arms are dark brown and hands are light flesh.

Legs

Dark brown hips with printed legs. The printing continues the dark tan tunic extension (tabard) and includes beige boot-line detailing at the knees.

Accessories

Normally includes a Blue Lightsaber with a chrome or silver hilt. The figure in the image is missing its weapon.

Color Scheme

Dark Brown and Dark Tan (Tan) are the primary robe colors, with Dark Orange for the hair and Light Flesh for the skin. Accurate to his Episode III appearance.

Printing Details

High-quality pad printing. The detail on the comlink and the layering of the Jedi tunics is crisp. Note the fine lines on the belt and the wrap-around look of the leg printing.

Variants

This specific variant (sw0489) has the comlink head. sw0435 is similar but lacks the comlink. Later versions (2014-2020) changed the hair color and robe details significantly.

Condition Notes

The Dark Orange hair piece is prone to minor scuffing. Check the torso for hairline cracks under the arms and the neck post for stress marks. The leg printing at the joints can rub off with heavy play.

Estimated Value

Used Complete: $12 - $18 USD. Used Incomplete: $8 - $10 USD. New/Mint: $25+ USD. Values fluctuate based on the secondary market (BrickLink/eBay).

Price (New)

Included in set 75012 (Retail: $24.99) and 75040 (Retail: $19.99). The figure currently accounts for nearly half the value of its original set retail price.

Compatible Sets

75012 BARC Speeder with Sidecar (2013), 75040 General Grievous' Wheel Bike (2014).

Character Background

Based on Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. The comlink represents his communication during the Battle of Utapau when hunting General Grievous.

Design Notes

Marked the transition where LEGO Star Wars moved toward more detailed torso-to-leg continuity. This specific hair mold was a staple for Obi-Wan for nearly a decade.

Similar Minifigures

sw0435 (Obi-Wan Kenobi - no headset), sw1082 (Obi-Wan 20th Anniversary), sw0812 (Obi-Wan with Pilot torso).

Collectibility

High. It is a 'definitive' prequel-era Kenobi for many. Collectors specifically seek the headset version for scene-specific dioramas (Battle of Utapau).

History

Launched in 2013 during a major refresh of Prequel-era sets, replacing the older 'Classic' yellow skin or early flesh-tone versions that had less detailed leg printing.

Interesting Facts

The same hair piece mold was also used for many other characters but is most iconic in this Dark Orange shade for Obi-Wan and Anakin.

Display Suggestions

Display alongside sw0515 General Grievous or a custom Varactyl for an Utapau-themed vignette. Keep out of direct sunlight to prevent the translucent lightsaber blade from fading.

Modification Potential

Excellent for purist customs; the head is perfect for any pilot or soldier MOC requiring a communication headset. The robes are standard and swap easily with other Jedi.

Overall Assessment

A solid B+ level minifigure. It offers great accuracy to the source material and consistent printing. It is an essential piece for any Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith collection.
