Superman - Black Suit, Silver 'S' Shield and Muscle Detail

Figure ID

sh077

Theme

Super Heroes

Year Released

2013 (San Diego Comic-Con Exclusive)

Rarity

Ultra-Rare. This figure was a limited-edition giveaway at the 2013 SDCC, restricted to approximately 200 copies, making it one of the rarest DC minifigures ever produced.

Head

Light flesh tone with a dual-sided print: an angry expression with glowing red 'heat vision' eyes and an alternate determined look. Paired with a standard black 'superhero' hairpiece with a signature curl.

Torso

Black torso featuring high-detail silver/grey muscle lining and a stylized Kryptonian 'House of El' crest. The design is based on the suit seen briefly in the Man of Steel era marketing and comics.

Legs

Standard black legs with silver/grey printing that continues the suit's armor and muscle detailing from the torso down through the hips and upper thighs.

Accessories

Includes a black fabric cape (soft or stiff variant depending on production batch) and the original SDCC cardback/clam-shell packaging if kept in mint condition.

Color Scheme

Monochromatic; primarily black with metallic silver and grey accents for the printing. Light flesh head and hands provide the only color contrast.

Printing Details

Extremely high-quality pad printing. The silver ink has a slight metallic sheen. Detail covers the head (dual-sided), torso (front and back), and the front of the legs/hips.

Variants

Standard Superman (sh003) uses traditional blue/red; this 'Black Suit' sh077 is the only official LEGO version of this specific design until the 2021 polybag variant which has different printing.

Condition Notes

Highly susceptible to cape fraying and torso cracks at the armpits. Due to its value, the 'S' crest printing must be checked for any scratches. Fake/bootleg versions are extremely common; check for LEGO logo on neck stud.

Estimated Value

Current market value ranges from $4,000 to $6,000 USD for a mint, used complete figure. If still sealed in the original SDCC packaging, it can exceed $8,000 - $10,000 USD.

Price (New)

$0 (Original Giveaway). However, the raffle style of SDCC makes the acquisition cost originally tied to travel and attendance at the convention.

Compatible Sets

None. This was not part of a retail set. It was distributed via a random drawing at the LEGO booth during San Diego Comic-Con 2013.

Character Background

Based on the 'Recovery Suit' or 'Solar Suit' Superman wears to regenerate after returning from the dead. While synonymous with 'The Death of Superman' comic, this version was released as a promotional tie-in for the Man of Steel film cycle.

Design Notes

Uses the 2013 Man of Steel mold/design language but translated into a monochrome palette. It is a milestone in LEGO's history of creating highly exclusive convention-only collectibles.

Similar Minifigures

Superman (sh731 - 2021 version), Bizarro (sh008), and General Zod (sh078).

Collectibility

Peak collectibility. It is considered a 'grail' figure for DC Super Heroes collectors. Prices have consistently appreciated since 2013 with very little fluctuation downward.

History

Released during the height of the early DCEU hype. This figure marked the beginning of Lego's trend of releasing high-value, limited-run DC and Marvel figures at major conventions.

Interesting Facts

The printing on the torso is slightly more reflective than the standard retail Man of Steel figure. Only 200 were officially given away, though a few extra employee copies may exist.

Display Suggestions

Should be kept in a UV-protected acrylic case (like a Wicked Brick or Zenith display) to prevent dust and color fading. Do not store the cape in a folded position to avoid permanent creasing.

Modification Potential

None recommended. Any modification to an authentic sh077 would result in a loss of thousands of dollars in value. Use a 2021 polybag version for custom MOCs instead.

Overall Assessment

A legendary minifigure. While the 2021 version made the black suit accessible, this 2013 SDCC original remains a premier investment piece and a crown jewel for any serious LEGO collection.
