Space Police 3 · 2009 (Introduced in the first wave of Space Police 3)

Figure ID
sp102
Theme
Space
Year Released
2009 (Introduced in the first wave of Space Police 3)
Rarity
Uncommon. While he appeared in several sets, the theme was short-lived (2009-2010), making him a nostalgic favorite for 2000s collectors.
Head
Unique molded rubberized head piece in Dark Red. It features detailed yellow and black printing of a 'crown' or tattoo design on the forehead and small black eyes. The bottom consists of four large tentacles and suction cup details underneath.
Torso
Dark Red torso with Space Police 'Alien' logo printing. Features a pattern of black and silver life-support systems and straps. The arms are Dark Red with Lime Green hands representing alien skin.
Legs
Dark Red legs (unprinted) with a Dark Red hip piece. Some variants in specific sets may have different leg colors, but the standard SP102 uses solid Dark Red.
Accessories
Typically equipped with a translucent lime green ray gun or a large brick-built 'loot' bag containing gold crystals. Some sets included a specialized printed 2x2 tile as a 'wanted' poster.
Color Scheme
Primarily Dark Red with Lime Green accents (hands and eyes/printing). Significant use of Black and Metallic Silver in the torso graphics.
Printing Details
High-quality pad printing on the forehead of the rubber mold (which is prone to rubbing off) and detailed mechanical printing on the torso front/back. No leg or arm printing.
Variants
There are slight variations in the 'wanted' posters and accessory loadouts across sets. A similar character named 'Squidman' appears in a different color scheme in later promotional materials, but this Dark Red version is the definitive one.
Condition Notes
The rubber head is highly susceptible to lint and dust. The yellow forehead printing is the primary wear point; it can flake or fade if handled excessively. Check for 'neck' tears in the rubber where it meets the torso peg.
Estimated Value
The complete minifigure is valued between $8.00 and $15.00 USD. The head piece alone (shown in image) often sells for $4.00 to $7.00 depending on the crispness of the yellow print.
Price (New)
Originally available in sets ranging from $10.00 (Squidman's Escape) to $90.00 (Galactic Enforcer). Not sold as a standalone figure.
Compatible Sets
Found in Set 5969 Squidman's Escape, 5971 Gold Heist, and 5974 Galactic Enforcer.
Character Background
Squidman is the primary antagonist and a notorious space-criminal within the Space Police 3 storyline. He is known for stealing gold crystals and using his 'Space Truck' to outrun law enforcement.
Design Notes
The head is a dual-material mold using a softer PVC/rubber material compared to the standard ABS plastic of the torso. This allowed for the complex, organic shape of the tentacles which would be impossible in a hard plastic mold.
Similar Minifigures
Rench (Space Police 3), Snake (Space Police 3), and later CMF series aliens like the Squid Alien from Series 21.
Collectibility
High for 'Space' aficionados and fans of the 'Criminals' sub-groups. It is a staple of the late 2000s LEGO aesthetic and holds steady value.
History
Space Police 3 was the first time LEGO focused heavily on unique, specialized alien head molds for every villain, departing from earlier themes that used standard heads with green/grey skin.
Interesting Facts
The Squidman head mold was later reused in the LEGO Atlantis theme for some of the deep-sea creatures, specifically the 'Squid Warrior' but in different colors.
Display Suggestions
Best displayed with his 'Wanted' poster tile or inside a 'Space Police' jail cell. UV protection is recommended as the dark red plastic and rubber can discolor over time.
Modification Potential
The head is a popular piece for 'Lovecraftian' or Cthulhu-inspired MOCs due to its tentacled appearance.
Overall Assessment
An iconic example of LEGO's 'extreme' design era in the late 2000s. The head mold is the standout feature, making it a recognizable and highly desirable figure for any sci-fi collection.
