Year Released
2014. It debuted in the Fire vs. Ice wave, marking the final major story arc of the Chima theme which saw the characters upgraded with fire-based powers.
Rarity
Uncommon. While not a limited promotional item, this specific 'Fire CHI' variant was only available in two medium-to-large sets and a polybag, making it harder to find than standard Laval figures.
Head
Double-sided head with white muzzle and light flesh tones. One side features a determined smirk, the other a battle snarl. It is topped with a specialized dark red lion mane headpiece with gold-printed head armor.
Torso
Red torso with intricate gold, dark red, and tan muscle printing. It features sleeveless tan arms and white hands to match the white paws of the character.
Legs
Red legs with gold and dark red mechanical/armor plating prints, including toe claw details at the base of the feet.
Accessories
Includes the Valious sword (large molded gold sword) and Fire CHI armor—a translucent orange 1x1 round tile attached to a pearl gold chest plate (neck bracket armor).
Color Scheme
A vibrant palette of Bright Red, Pearl Gold, Tan, and Trans-Orange, reflecting the Fire CHI power-up aesthetic.
Printing Details
High-quality pad printing on the head, torso, and legs. Notable for the gold metallic ink and the continuity of the armor pattern from the torso down through the hips to the legs.
Variants
Laval has many variants including standard (loc001), Royal armor (loc030), and Speedorz versions. This 'Fire' version is distinguished by the dark red mane and orange CHI orb.
Condition Notes
Common wear points include the rubbery texture of the mane which can attract dust, and 'silvering' or rubbing of the gold printing on the knees. Check for stress marks on the gold neck armor clips.
Estimated Value
Used Complete: $8.00 - $12.00 USD. New: $15.00 - $22.00 USD. Individual parts like the mane can fetch $3.00 alone.
Price (New)
Originally available in sets ranging from $14.99 (70144) to $119.99 (70146). The polybag 30262 was approximately $4.99.
Compatible Sets
70144 Laval's Fire Lion, 70146 Flying Phoenix Fire Temple, and 30262 Heatwave polybag.
Character Background
Laval is the Prince of the Lion Tribe and the main protagonist of the Legends of Chima series. In the later seasons, he uses the Fire CHI to battle the prehistoric Ice Tribes.
Design Notes
The dual-molded effects and the shift from blue CHI to orange CHI represented a major design pivot for the theme, leaning heavily into translucent plastic elements.
Similar Minifigures
Fire CHI versions of Eris (loc076), Cragger (loc077), and Worriz (loc082).
Collectibility
High for Chima enthusiasts. While Chima ended in 2014, the unique animal head molds and detailed armor make it a favorite for MOC builders and nostalgic collectors.
History
Chima was LEGO's successor to Ninjago (intended to replace it temporarily). This figure represents the peak of Chima's production quality before the theme was retired to make way for Nexo Knights.
Interesting Facts
The Valious sword accessory held by the figure is one of the largest single-piece sword molds LEGO has produced for a standard minifigure.
Display Suggestions
Best displayed on a 'Fire' themed baseplate alongside Phoenix or Lion tribe members. UV protection is recommended for the translucent orange CHI orb to prevent fading.
Modification Potential
The head/mane combo is frequently used in 'Fursona' customs or D&D Leonin character MOCs. The gold armor is a standard 3.2mm bar attachment compatible with many themes.
Overall Assessment
A standout figure from a defunct but beloved theme. The printing is superior to contemporary 'City' figures of the same era, making it a high-value aesthetic piece for any collection.
