Imperial Officer (Dark Gray Uniform, Smirking Yellow Head)

Figure ID

sw0046

Theme

Star Wars

Year Released

2002 (First released in set 7166 Imperial Shuttle)

Rarity

Uncommon. While not ultra-rare, it only appeared in two sets during the early license period when production runs were smaller compared to modern sets.

Head

Classic yellow minifigure head with a black-printed 'smirk' (simple curved line and dot eyes). This is a legacy face print shared with many early 2000s themes.

Torso

Dark Gray with Imperial Officer uniform print. Features a rank insignia plaque (5 red/blue squares), a silver code cylinder, and a belt. The back is unprinted.

Legs

Plain Dark Gray legs and hips with no printing.

Accessories

Includes an Imperial Officer's kepi-style hat in Dark Gray. While not pictured with a weapon here, it originally often came with a standard megaphone-style blaster.

Color Scheme

Primary Dark Gray (the older 'Elephant Gray' shade), with classic yellow accents for the skin and small red/blue/silver details on the torso print.

Printing Details

Pad printing on the torso and head. The design is minimalist by modern standards, lacking arm or leg printing, but has very crisp alignment for the era.

Variants

The sw0046b variant features a 'light flesh' head released later. Sw0046 is the original yellow-skinned version. There is also a version with a more complex rank tile (sw0582) released in 2014.

Condition Notes

Look for cracking at the sides of the torso and 'biting' marks on the head under the hat. Yellowing is less common on Dark Gray, but 'clutch power' in the legs can weaken over time.

Estimated Value

Used: $8 - $15 USD; New: $25 - $35 USD. Value is driven by collectors and builders seeking to recreate 'Classic' Star Wars dioramas.

Price (New)

N/A (Originally part of set 7166 for $50.00 or set 7264 for $55.00). Not sold individually.

Compatible Sets

7166 Imperial Shuttle (2002), 7264 Imperial Inspection (2005).

Character Background

Generic Imperial Officers represent the middle-management hierarchy of the Galactic Empire, modeled after the bridge crews seen on Star Destroyers and the Death Star.

Design Notes

A bridge between the earliest Star Wars figures (1999) and the modern era; it retains the yellow skin but introduces more specific uniform printing compared to the 1999 Pilot.

Similar Minifigures

sw0035a (TIE Pilot), sw0114 (Grand Moff Tarkin - First Version), sw0014 (Imperial Pilot).

Collectibility

High for nostalgia-driven collectors of the 'Yellow Era' of LEGO Star Wars. It is a staple army-builder for vintage displays.

History

Launched during the second wave of Star Wars sets (early 2000s). This design was retired when LEGO transitioned to flesh-toned skins for licensed themes in 2004/2005.

Interesting Facts

This officer appears in the original LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game (2005). The Dark Gray color is the 'old' gray, which was discontinued and replaced by 'Dark Stone Grey' (Dark Bluish Gray).

Display Suggestions

Display alongside vintage Darth Vader and Stormtroopers on a classic light-gray baseplate to maintain the 'Classic' aesthetic.

Modification Potential

Excellent for purist customs; the torso is highly versatile for generic naval or military MOCs. The hat is often swapped for modern hair to represent different officers.

Overall Assessment

A quintessential piece of LEGO Star Wars history. While simple by today's standards, its clean lines and 'Classic Space' vibes make it a 9/10 for vintage charm.
