Kozu

Figure ID

njo073

Theme

Ninjago

Year Released

2013 (Released as part of the initial wave for the second season of the Ninjago TV show)

Rarity

Uncommon. He was the primary antagonist commander for the Stone Army and appeared in three sets, making him accessible but highly sought after by collectors of the early 'golden era' of Ninjago.

Head

General Kozu features a unique red and white face print over a black head piece. It includes four glowing red eyes, white fangs, and a cracked stone texture. He is topped with a black samurai helmet (shikoro) with red deer-style antlers.

Torso

Red torso with intricate silver and white plate armor printing. The center features the Green Ninja symbol (spirit emblem) which is a plot point. He has black arms and light bluish gray hands.

Legs

Black legs with red and silver armor printing on the hips and front of the legs, continuing the Stone Army aesthetic with strap and plating details.

Accessories

General Kozu typically carries one or two black Scimitars (curved katanas). In this image, he is holding a single black scimitar. He is also equipped with a red shoulder armor piece (pauldron) that allows for weapon storage on the back.

Color Scheme

Primary Red and Black, with accents of Silver, White, and a singular Green circular emblem in the center of the chest.

Printing Details

High-quality pad printing on the head, torso (front and back), and the front of the legs. The 'four-eye' and 'cracked stone' motif is exceptionally sharp for the 2013 era.

Variants

There are two main versions: njo073 (this one with 2 arms) and njo552 (the Legacy version from 2019). The 2013 version is distinguished by the specific armor print and helmet styling.

Condition Notes

Common wear includes 'cracking' on the red antler piece and side-torso cracks. Collectors should check for the tip of the scimitar being bent or the silver printing on the legs being rubbed off.

Estimated Value

Used: $10.00 - $15.00 USD; New/Mint: $20.00 - $30.00 USD. Prices fluctuate based on the stiffness of the antler attachment.

Price (New)

He was included in sets ranging from the $19.99 (70502 Cole's Earth Driller) to the $69.99 (70504 Garmatron).

Compatible Sets

70502 Cole's Earth Driller (2013), 70504 Garmatron (2013), 70505 Temple of Light (2013).

Character Background

General Kozu is the four-armed (though represented here in two-arm form) commander of the invincible Stone Army. He speaks an ancient language and serves the Overlord and Lord Garmadon during their conquest of Ninjago Island.

Design Notes

This minifigure perfectly captures the 'indestructible' feel of the Stone Army. The use of the deer antler element in bright red was a creative way to denote high rank without creating a new specialized mold for his helmet.

Similar Minifigures

Stone Army Warrior (njo072), Stone Army Scout (njo071), Giant Stone Warrior, and the 2019 Legacy version of Kozu.

Collectibility

High. As a named general and a major season antagonist, he is a cornerstone for any Ninjago collection. His design remains unique even 10 years later.

History

Kozu marked the transition of Ninjago villains from the snake-like Serpentine to more humanoid, armored warriors. This design set the template for 'elite' enemies in the series for years to come.

Interesting Facts

In the TV show, Kozu has four arms (similar to Garmadon), but the 2013 minifigure only has two. It wasn't until later that LEGO consistently used the 'double-torso' piece for him in all formats.

Display Suggestions

Best displayed leading a group of Stone Army Scouts (njo071) or standing atop the Garmatron vehicle. Keep away from direct sunlight to prevent the red plastic of the antlers from becoming brittle.

Modification Potential

Collectors often swap the torso for a Garmadon-style four-arm torso (part 98127c01) to make the minifigure more 'show-accurate'.

Overall Assessment

A classic Ninjago villain with a striking silhouette. While not the most expensive figure, his distinctive helmet and 'cracked' face printing make him a standout piece of LEGO's 2013 lineup. Rating: 8.5/10.
