Legacy · 2019 (January Wave)

Figure ID
njo494 (Jay) and njo492 (Kai)
Theme
Ninjago
Year Released
2019 (January Wave)
Rarity
Common; these figures appeared in high-volume, relatively affordable sets during the first wave of the Legacy line.
Head
Standard yellow heads with aggressive squinting/combat expressions. Jay features eyebrows with a lightning-bolt-style notch; Kai features thick, spiked eyebrows. They wear wrap-around ninja masks (headgear) composed of a crown piece and a lower mask piece in blue and red respectively.
Torso
Jay (Blue): Dark blue torso with a silver octopus/lightning emblem, silver belt, and one dark bluish-gray arm. Kai (Red): Dark red torso with a gold lion/fire emblem and black/brown belt detailing. Both feature high-detail printing inspired by their original 2011 designs but updated with 2019 sharp-line aesthetics.
Legs
Blue and red legs respectively. Jay features a white sash/belt print hanging down. Kai features dark red knee plates and belt strap printing. Both lack side-leg printing.
Accessories
Both figures are equipped with dark bluish-gray shoulder armor (Scabbard with two katana slots). Standard katanas appear missing in this specific image but are the default intended accessories.
Color Scheme
A mix of standard Bright Blue and Bright Red with dark-tone accents (Dark Blue and Dark Red) to create depth. Metallic gold and silver inks are used for the chest emblems.
Printing Details
Pad-printed front and back torsos. The designs are a modern refinement of the 2011 'Pilot' suits, featuring much cleaner lines and more subtle gradient shading.
Variants
These are the 'Legacy' variants. They differ from the 2011 originals by having more detailed torso printing and two-piece mask helmets rather than single-piece cowls.
Condition Notes
The shoulder armor is prone to slight stress marks if removed frequently. The silver/gold crests on the chest are common wear points for play-used figures. Check for 'neck cracks' on the torso.
Estimated Value
Used: $3.00 - $5.00 each. New: $6.00 - $8.00 each. They are very affordable due to high production numbers.
Price (New)
Jay appeared in the $14.99 Jay's Storm Fighter (70668) and Kai in the $29.99 Kai's Blade Cycle & Zane's Snowmobile (70667).
Compatible Sets
70668 (Jay's Storm Fighter), 70667 (Kai's Blade Cycle), 70670 (Monastery of Spinjitzu).
Character Background
Jay (Master of Lightning) and Kai (Master of Fire) are core protagonists of the Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu series. These outfits represent their look during the reimagined 'Legacy' retelling of the series' beginnings.
Design Notes
The 'Legacy' line was a milestone for LEGO, acknowledging long-term fans by recreating 2011 molds and prints with 2019 manufacturing technology. The two-piece mask was a major design evolution for the theme.
Similar Minifigures
2011 Pilot Jay (njo004), 2011 Pilot Kai (njo007), and Core/Evo ninja variants from 2022.
Collectibility
Moderate for completionists. These are essential for fans of the show's early seasons who missed the original sets, though they are not investment-grade rarities.
History
Released for the 10th-anniversary lead-up, these versions bridged the gap between 'Classic' Ninjago and the modern era of the theme.
Interesting Facts
The emblems on their chests are updated versions of the symbols found on the 2011 spinners. Jay's emblem specifically is meant to look like an octopus combined with a lightning strike.
Display Suggestions
Best displayed on a gray baseplate (as shown) or within the 70670 Monastery of Spinjitzu set to recreate the training scenes.
Modification Potential
Excellent. The shoulder armor is compatible with most katanas and the torso/leg prints are generic enough to be used for custom fantasy warriors.
Overall Assessment
High-quality, durable, and iconic. These represent the definitive 'modern-classic' versions of the characters. Rating: 8/10 for design, 3/10 for rarity.
