Character Background

The prince of the Lion Tribe and the protagonist of the Chima series. He is tasked with defending the CHI and restoring balance to the land.

Design Notes

The molded animal heads were a major innovation for 2013, moving away from standard minifigure heads to create a more anthropomorphic feel.

Similar Minifigures

Laval (Classic), Lagravis, Longtooth, and other Lion Tribe warriors using the same molded head base.

Collectibility

Moderate. Collectors of 'retired lines' or animal-themed figures enjoy these, but Chima hasn't seen the same price surge as Ninjago.

History

Chima was intended to be the successor to Ninjago but ultimately ran concurrently. Laval remains the most iconic face of the entire multi-year run.

Interesting Facts

The voice actor for Laval in the TV series is the same actor who voiced many characters in LEGO Ninjago and Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Display Suggestions

Best displayed on a rocky outcrop MOC or with other tribal leaders from the Chima theme in a council setting.

Modification Potential

The head and armor pieces are frequently used by MOC builders for custom fantasy races or DnD-style Leonin characters.

Overall Assessment

A solid B-tier collectible. It is a visually striking figure with great textures, though the loss of his cape and sword (shown here) reduces its display impact.
