The Chamber of Secrets / Classic Harry Potter · 2002. Released as part of the initial wave for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, marking LEGO's first specialized mold for a house-elf character.

Figure ID

Theme
Harry Potter
Year Released
2002. Released as part of the initial wave for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, marking LEGO's first specialized mold for a house-elf character.
Rarity
Uncommon. While it was mass-produced in the early 2000s, the figure was only available in two sets during a specific era of Harry Potter sets. Finding one in high quality with the specialized head mold intact (ears often get chewed or scuffed) is becoming more difficult for collectors.
Head
Unique molded Light Flesh head. Features large green eyes, a long thin nose, and pointed ears. This was a custom mold specifically for Dobby and does not use the standard minifigure head shape.
Torso
Tan torso with printed ragged pillowcase/tunic. The print features black and grey fold lines and a knotted shoulder tie. It does not have back printing, which was standard for 2002.
Legs
Short, non-bending legs in Tan. These are the classic 'short legs' introduced for smaller characters like Dobby, Yoda, and children.
Accessories
Missing in the image. Originally came with a Tom Riddle's Diary (printed 2x2 tile) containing a hidden sock (1x1 tile) in set 4731, or a sock accessory in other contexts.
Color Scheme
Monochromatic Tan and Light Flesh. The color choice reflecting Dobby's 'dirty' appearance and his natural skin tone.
Printing Details
Pad-printed torso with minimalist line work. The eyes on the head mold are precision pad-printed with green and black. Compared to modern figures, the printing is simple and lacks the texturing of the 2018/2020 CMF versions.
Variants
This is the original version. Subsequent versions (hp144) released in 2010 and the CMF versions (colhp04) released in 2018 have significantly more detailed printing and revised head molds.
Condition Notes
The soft plastic used for the ears is prone to bite marks or 'nicks.' The tan printing on the torso often fades or scratches over time. Check the 'neck' of the head mold for cracks, as it fits tighter than a standard head.
Estimated Value
Used: $5 - $8 USD | New (Sealed in Set Context): High, as the sets themselves are vintage. As a standalone figure, its value is moderate due to the 2010 and 2018 re-releases satisfying demand for the character.
Price (New)
Originally available in Set 4731 (Dobby's Release) for approximately $6.99 USD in 2002.
Compatible Sets
4731 Dobby's Release (2002), 4735 Slytherin (2002).
Character Background
Dobby is a house-elf who first appeared in 'The Chamber of Secrets'. He served the Malfoy family before being freed by Harry Potter. He is one of the most beloved characters in the franchise, known for his bravery and loyalty.
Design Notes
This figure is iconic for the 'ears' which extend beyond the standard minifigure width. It represents the early 2000s era of LEGO where licensed characters received highly specialized, non-circular head molds to ensure likeness.
Similar Minifigures
Dobby (hp144), Dobby (colhp04), Creature (hp095), and various Yoda minifigures from the same era.
Collectibility
High for 'completionist' Harry Potter collectors. While the newer Dobby figures are 'better' by modern standards, many fans prefer the nostalgic, simpler look of this 2002 original.
History
This was the first-ever LEGO house-elf. It set the precedent for how small creatures would be scaled in the Harry Potter line before the theme went on a multi-year hiatus in the mid-2000s.
Interesting Facts
The head mold is surprisingly detailed for 2002, featuring molded wrinkles on the forehead that are not highlighted by print but visible in person.
Display Suggestions
Display in a small scene with a Lucius Malfoy minifigure and a trans-clear stick to make him 'hover,' or inside a 'Chamber of Secrets' themed display case.
Modification Potential
Low for purists due to the specialized head mold. However, the torso is often used for custom 'peasant' child MOCs because of its simple ragged tunic print.
Overall Assessment
B+ rating. It is a charming piece of LEGO history. While the printing is primitive compared to modern standards, the head mold is instantly recognizable and captures the character's early cinematic look perfectly.
