Figure ID
sw0535
Theme
Star Wars
Year Released
2014 - First appeared in set 75042 Droid Gunship
Rarity
Common to Uncommon. While it appeared in several high-volume sets, this specific print pattern was the standard version of 'New' Chewbacca for several years (2014-2022).
Head
The head and torso are a single molded 'hair' piece that fits over a plain reddish-brown neck pillar/torso core. It features tan/medium nougat highlights around the eyes and face to simulate fur texture.
Torso
Reddish brown molded fur piece with medium nougat fur highlights. The back includes the continuation of the fur mold. The arms are standard reddish brown with no printing.
Legs
Standard reddish brown legs with medium nougat fur highlights printed on the front of the thighs and shins. The hips are unprinted.
Accessories
Typically includes a Bowcaster (built from a stud shooter or a specialized crossbow piece). The figure in the image is currently missing its accessory.
Color Scheme
Primary color is Reddish Brown with accent highlights in Medium Nougat and Tan. Features small black and white printing for the eyes and nose.
Printing Details
Pad-printed highlights on the head, chest, and legs. The level of detail is significantly higher than the 1999-2013 'classic' version, utilizing more organic, wispy fur patterns.
Variants
Differs from sw0011 (Classic) which had no eye color and less detail. It also differs from sw1158 (Snowy/Hoth version) and the newer 2023 version which has even more refined face printing.
Condition Notes
Common wear points include 'chipping' on the leg fur printing and hair-line cracks on the sides of the torso. Large amounts of dust can get trapped in the deep fur molding of the head/torso piece.
Estimated Value
$3.00 - $6.00 USD (Used), $7.00 - $10.00 USD (New/Mint). It is a very affordable figure due to its high production volume.
Price (New)
Originally included in sets ranging from $20 to $150. As a standalone figure on the secondary market it remains very close to its original effective value.
Compatible Sets
75042 Droid Gunship, 75094 Imperial Shuttle Tydirium, 75105 Millennium Falcon, 75192 UCS Millennium Falcon, 75212 Kessel Run Millennium Falcon.
Character Background
Chewbacca is a Wookiee warrior and co-pilot of the Millennium Falcon alongside Han Solo. This figure represents his appearance across the primary Star Wars saga.
Design Notes
A massive improvement over the original mold. The inclusion of pupil printing and multi-toned fur marks the 'modern' era of LEGO Star Wars character design.
Similar Minifigures
sw0011 (Classic Chewbacca), sw0763 (Chewbacca - Dark Tan Fur), sw1158 (Snowy Chewbacca), sw0714 (Wookiee Warrior).
Collectibility
Medium. While every Star Wars collector needs a Chewie, the high supply prevents this specific variant from being a high-value investment piece.
History
Until 2014, Chewbacca remained largely unchanged for 15 years. This sw0535 variant represented the first major overhaul of the character's mold and printing style.
Interesting Facts
The design of the eyes—white dots with black pupils—was a controversial change for purists who preferred the simple black holes of the original 1999 version.
Display Suggestions
Best displayed in the cockpit of a Millennium Falcon MOC or alongside a Han Solo minifigure. Use a small translucent 1x2 brick to help him stand if his leg joints are loose.
Modification Potential
Excellent for Wookiee army building. The leg and head/torso pieces are frequently used by fans to create custom Wookiee characters (MOCs) for Kashyyyk dioramas.
Overall Assessment
A solid, era-defining minifigure. While not rare, it is an essential character that perfectly captures the likeness of Chewbacca with high-quality molding and paint apps.
