Griphook - Gringotts Bank Goblin

Figure ID

hp117

Theme

Harry Potter

Year Released

2011 - Debuted in the set 10217 Diagon Alley.

Rarity

Uncommon. While not a limited polybag, this specific version was exclusive to a high-priced D2C (Direct to Consumer) set that has long since been retired.

Head

Light Flesh Goblin head piece with pointed ears molded in. Features detailed printing including high cheekbones, furrowed brows, and a wide, crooked smirk with visible teeth. It is a unique mold introduced for the 2011 Harry Potter wave.

Torso

Dark Red suit jacket over a Dark Bluish Gray vest and a Dark Brown cravat. Feature back printing showing the waistline of the suit. Arms are Dark Red with Light Flesh hands.

Legs

Plain Black short legs (non-articulated), typical for shorter characters like Goblins or House Elves in this era.

Accessories

In the original set, he was supplied with a printed Gringotts vault key and a printed 2x2 tile representing a Gringotts letter; however, these are missing in the provided image.

Color Scheme

The primary colors are Dark Red and Black, accented by Dark Bluish Gray and Light Flesh. This reflects the formal, slightly Victorian attire of the Gringotts employees.

Printing Details

High-quality pad printing on the face and torso. The face print captures the prosthetic makeup look from the films remarkably well for the era. Torso printing includes lapel and vest button details.

Variants

This is the 'modern classic' version. There is a 2002 version (hp020) with a yellow head and a 2020 Collectible Minifigure version (colhp37) which features a different outfit and the Sword of Gryffindor.

Condition Notes

The molded ears are high-wear points and can suffer from paint rubbing or 'nicks.' Check the torso for hairline cracks at the armpits and ensure the headpiece is not loose on the neck peg.

Estimated Value

Used: $12 - $18 USD. New/Mint: $22 - $30 USD. The value has remained relatively stable due to the newer CMF version being available.

Price (New)

Originally available in Set 10217 Diagon Alley, which retailed for $149.99 USD in 2011.

Compatible Sets

Character Background

Griphook is a Gringotts goblin who played a crucial role in 'The Sorcerer's Stone' by taking Harry to his vault and later in 'The Deathly Hallows' by helping Harry, Ron, and Hermione break into Bellatrix Lestrange's vault.

Design Notes

This figure marked a significant leap in realism for LEGO Goblins, moving away from the 'standard' minifigure head to a specialized mold that integrated the ears, providing a more screen-accurate silhouette.

Similar Minifigures

Gringotts Goblin (hp122), Griphook - CMF Series (colhp37), and Professor Flitwick (hp124).

Collectibility

High for Harry Potter completionists. Because he is central to the Diagon Alley scene and the Gringotts Bank, he remains a staple for MOC builders creating wizarding world dioramas.

History

Initially released during the final wave of the original Harry Potter run (2010-2011) to coincide with the release of the Deathly Hallows Part 2 film.

Interesting Facts

Despite being a goblin, this figure uses the same Light Flesh skin tone as human characters like Harry or Ron, unlike the 2002 version which was Bright Yellow.

Display Suggestions

Best displayed alongside the 10217 Diagon Alley buildings or the newer 75978 Diagon Alley set. Looks great standing on a marble-style baseplate to simulate the bank floor.

Modification Potential

The head can be used for custom fantasy MOCs (orcs, imps, or gnomes). The torso is also useful for custom 19th-century civilian figures.

Overall Assessment

A solid, well-detailed figure that captures the essence of the character. While superseded in articulation by the newer CMF version, this remains the definitive 'Banker' outfit Griphook.
