Theme
The Hobbit / The Lord of the Rings
Year Released
2012. Debuted in the set '79002 Attack of the Wargs' during the initial wave of The Hobbit product line.
Rarity
Uncommon to Rare. This version was exclusive to a single set that has been retired for over a decade. While not a limited-edition giveaway, the high demand for main characters from the Tolkien universe increases its secondary market scarcity.
Head
Light Flesh, dual-sided printing with a stern expression and a fierce battle expression (bared teeth). It features a dark brown beard/mustache print and is paired with a specific textured black hair piece with molded grey hair highlights.
Torso
Dark Blue torso with high-detail printing of dwarven chainmail and a leather tunic. Features a ornate silver belt and buckle. Dark Bluish Gray arms with Light Flesh hands.
Legs
Short, non-bending Black legs, reflecting the shorter stature of the Dwarf race in LEGO form. They are unprinted.
Accessories
Includes the Orcrist sword in Flat Silver. This mold was specially created for The Hobbit line to represent Thorin's Elven blade.
Color Scheme
A palette of Dark Blue, Black, and Flat Silver, evoking the regal yet practical clothing of the heir to the Lonely Mountain.
Printing Details
High-quality pad printing on the torso (front and back) and head. The metallic silver ink used for the chainmail and buckle has a reflective quality typical of early 2010s licensed figures.
Variants
There are three primary variants: lor037 (this one), lor070 (Thorin in Lake-town armor), and lor093 (Thorin in heavy plate armor from The Battle of the Five Armies).
Condition Notes
Prone to silver paint rubbing on the torso buckle and 'hair-line' cracks on the sides of the torso. The specific hair piece can lose its grey paint applications over time if handled frequently.
Estimated Value
Used Complete: $25.00 - $35.00; New/Mint: $45.00+; Incomplete: $15.00 - $20.00. Prices vary based on the condition of the hair piece highlights.
Price (New)
Released in set 79002 which retailed for $49.99 USD in 2012. The set contained 5 minifigures, giving it a rough initial value of $10.00 per figure at retail.
Compatible Sets
79002 Attack of the Wargs (2012).
Character Background
Thorin Oakenshield is the son of Thrain and king-in-exile of the Dwarves of Erebor. He leads the company of 13 dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf, to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug.
Design Notes
This figure is notable for the unique hair mold which captures his 'salt and pepper' look from the Peter Jackson films. The torso printing is an excellent translation of the costume design used in the 'Unexpected Journey' film.
Similar Minifigures
Fili (lor036), Kili (lor038), and the 'The Hobbit' version of Bilbo Baggins (lor030).
Collectibility
High. As the central protagonist of the Hobbit trilogy, Thorin is essential for any Tolkien LEGO collector. Prices have remained stable with a steady upward trend due to the license no longer being active.
History
This was the first-ever LEGO Thorin Oakenshield produced. It marked LEGO's expansion into the Hobbit trilogy after the success of the initial Lord of the Rings sets.
Interesting Facts
The sword 'Orcrist' included with this figure is one of the few LEGO swords that is actually oriented correctly in the figure's hand to match the crossguard design of the movie prop.
Display Suggestions
Best displayed alongside the rest of Thorin's Company. A 'Company of Dwarves' lineup on a wood-grain baseplate or inside a UV-protected shadow box is highly recommended.
Modification Potential
The hair and head are often used by MOC builders for creating custom medieval kings or seasoned warriors. The torso is excellent for generic high-fantasy Royal Guard customs.
Overall Assessment
An iconic minifigure from a beloved retired theme. It boasts a unique hair piece and high-detail torso printing that holds up well against modern standards. A 'Must-Buy' for Hobbit fans.
