Lego Racers / Extreme Team · 1999 (First release)

Figure ID
rac001
Theme
Racers
Year Released
1999 (First release)
Rarity
Uncommon. While he appeared in two relatively affordable sets in the late 90s, the figure is highly iconic to fans of the LEGO Racers video game series, driving up demand for high-quality specimens.
Head
Standard yellow skin tone with a unique print. Features brown reddish reflective aviator sunglasses, a wide confident grin showing teeth, and subtle stubble detail. The head typically does not feature a reverse side print.
Torso
White torso base with red arms and dark gray hands. The front print features a blue and white striped racing jersey/vest pattern with a red five-pointed star on the left chest. This design mimics high-speed racing gear of the late 90s.
Legs
Solid blue unprinted legs. Note: This version is the standard iconic release from the 1999/2000 era.
Accessories
Includes a Blue Minifigure Helmet (Small Shell) with a unique white stripe/chevron printing pattern that aligns with the torso design. Does not usually come with a visor, as the sunglasses are printed on the head.
Color Scheme
A patriotic and bold Primary Blue, Red, and White palette, accented by Dark Gray hands and a yellow face.
Printing Details
High-quality pad printing typical of the late 90s. The detail on the helmet is particularly notable for that era as it involves curved surface printing that matches the torso stripes.
Variants
There is a later version (rac022) released in 2001 with slightly different torso printing and a red helmet. The version in the image is the 'Classic' 1999 version.
Condition Notes
The helmet printing is prone to 'chipping' or rubbing off at the top. The torso's white base is susceptible to yellowing if exposed to sunlight. Check for cracks on the red arms at the elbow or wrist.
Estimated Value
Used Complete: $8 - $15 USD; New/Mint: $25+ USD. Prices can fluctuate based on the crispness of the helmet print.
Price (New)
Originally appeared in set 5735 (Adventurers Dragster) for approximately $10 USD and set 4567 (Surfer Racer) for $10 USD.
Compatible Sets
Set 5735: Adventurers Dragster (1999); Set 4567: Surfer Racer (2000); Set 1318: Rocket Racer Polybag (2000).
Character Background
Rocket Racer is the legendary final boss of the 1999 'LEGO Racers' video game. He is known as the greatest racer in the LEGO universe, residing on 'Circuit Island'.
Design Notes
The figure is an early example of LEGO creating a 'character-driven' minifigure for a digital cross-promotion. The star on the chest became his signature logo.
Similar Minifigures
Veronica Voltage, Basil the Batlord (as he appeared in LEGO Racers), and the Series 18 Race Car Guy.
Collectibility
High. He is a 'Nostalgia Core' figure for the 90s generation of LEGO fans who grew up playing the PC and Nintendo 64 games.
History
Rocket Racer marks the transition of LEGO into character-based branding within their own home-grown themes, moving away from generic townspeople to named heroes/villains.
Interesting Facts
Despite being the ultimate champion in the video game, his physical LEGO sets were actually quite small and affordable, making the figure easy to obtain at the time.
Display Suggestions
Best displayed next to a custom MOC of his classic gray and red 'Rocket' car from the game or on a podium-style baseplate.
Modification Potential
Commonly modified with a trans-light-blue visor and 'Power Miners' crystals to represent the 'Warp Turbo' bricks from the video game.
Overall Assessment
A legendary figure for any 90s LEGO collector. While not the most expensive figure, his historical significance to LEGO's gaming history makes him a centerpiece of any Racers-themed collection.
