Aquaman - Gold Armor

Figure ID

sh429

Theme

Marvel / DC Super Heroes

Year Released

2017 - Debuted in the set '76085 Battle of Atlantis' during the release wave for the Justice League live-action film.

Rarity

Common to Uncommon. While restricted to a specific set, that set was a low-cost entry point ($19.99), making the figure widely accessible.

Head

Light Flesh, dual-sided. Features orange-brown eyebrows, a beard/mustache, and two expressions: a determined scowl and a fierce shouting face. Note: The hairpiece is missing from the image.

Torso

Pearl Gold with dark brown and copper muscle/armor printing. The design reflects the intricate Atlantean scale armor seen in the DCEU. Features black hands.

Legs

Pearl Gold with matching dark brown and copper plating armor prints on the front of the legs and hips.

Accessories

Missing in image. Originally included a Pearl Gold trident (3-prong version) and a dark orange long messy hairpiece.

Color Scheme

Dominant Pearl Gold with Black accents (hands) and Light Flesh (head). Printing uses copper and dark brown for depth.

Printing Details

High-quality pad printing. The torso and legs feature alignment that continues the scale armor pattern across the hip joint, which was a standard of excellence for 2017 licensed figures.

Variants

This is the 'Justice League' film version. Other variants include the comic-based version (yellow/green), the 'Aquaman' solo film version (sh543), and the 'Arctic' variant.

Condition Notes

Image shows significant missing parts (hair, trident). Pearl gold plastic is prone to 'swirl' marks from the molding process. Check for torso cracks and fading on the copper prints.

Estimated Value

$5 - $8 USD (Used/Complete). In the state shown (missing hair/accessories), value is approximately $2 - $4 USD.

Price (New)

Retail $19.99 (Set 76085). The figure was one of four included in the set, giving it a rough retail value of $5 at launch.

Compatible Sets

76085 Battle of Atlantis (2017).

Character Background

Based on Jason Momoa's portrayal of Arthur Curry (Aquaman) in the DC Extended Universe. He is the heir to the throne of Atlantis with superhuman strength and the ability to command sea life.

Design Notes

LEGO moved away from the bright comic colors (Orange/Green) to this monochromatic Pearl Gold to mimic the movie's more 'gritty' costume design.

Similar Minifigures

sh543 Aquaman (Solo movie version), sh050 Aquaman (Comic version), and the more recent 2023 version from the 'Lost Kingdom' sets.

Collectibility

Moderate. It is a necessary piece for completing the movie-accurate Justice League team, but it is not a high-value 'grail' figure due to high production numbers.

History

Initially released as part of the 2017 Justice League wave. It marked a transition toward more realistic, textured armor printing for DC figures.

Interesting Facts

Despite being the titular hero of the set, this version appeared in the cheapest set of the wave, making him more common than the 'Civillian' Bruce Wayne or Tactical Suit Batman from the same era.

Display Suggestions

Best displayed alongside the 2017 Justice League members (Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Cyborg, Superman). Use a blue transparent baseplate to simulate an underwater environment.

Modification Potential

Excellent for MOCs. The gold armor is generic enough to be used for custom fantasy knights, gold-plated droids, or other armored superheroes.

Overall Assessment

A solid movie-accurate representation. While the figure in the image is incomplete, it remains a well-detailed example of LEGO's high-fidelity printing capabilities from the late 2010s.
