Theme
Star Wars
Year Released
Released in 2007. It debuted specifically in March 2007 as part of the 'Ultimate Collector Series' era, coinciding with the 30th Anniversary of Star Wars.
Rarity
Uncommon to Rare. Because this specific variant was only available in two sets from 2007-2008 and features a unique Dark Green body, it is harder to find than standard R2-D2 or R4 units.
Head
Half-Circle (Dome) piece. It is White with Dark Green and Silver metallic printing. Includes circular sensor aperture and small orange and green dots for indicator lights. It has no dual-sided printing.
Torso
Dark Green cylindrical body. Front printing features silver and light grey panels representing diagnostic ports, logic displays, and tool compartments. No back printing was provided for this 2007 version.
Legs
Standard Astromech Droid legs in Dark Green. These are non-moving, single-piece molded parts that peg into the sides of the body cylinder. There is no printing on the feet or sides of the legs.
Accessories
Usually none. As an Astromech, the figure is self-contained. In original sets, it was part of the vehicle builds (often just the head was used in smaller Jedi Starfighters, but this full version came in the Hyperdrive set).
Color Scheme
Primary: Dark Green and White. Accents: Metallic Silver, Light Bluish Gray, and small bits of Orange. This is the signature color scheme of Obi-Wan Kenobi's droid.
Printing Details
Pad-printed dome and torso. Typical for the mid-2000s, the printing is high contrast but lacks the 360-degree wrap-around detail seen in modern 2020+ droids. Alignment on the dome can sometimes be slightly off-center.
Variants
This sw0163 is the full-bodied version. A later version (sw0594) exists with a different torso/head detail from 2014. There is also a version where only the head was provided for non-minifigure scale ships.
Condition Notes
Main concern is the White dome yellowing over time if exposed to UV. The Dark Green body hides scratches well, but white printing on the dome can chip. Check for 'clutch power' on the leg pegs.
Estimated Value
Used: $12.00 - $18.00 USD. New/Mint: $22.00 - $30.00 USD. Prices fluctuate based on the leg joint tightness and dome whiteness.
Price (New)
N/A (Available in sets only). Most commonly found in set 7661 ($49.99 MSRP) and set 7660 ($29.99 MSRP) in 2007.
Compatible Sets
7661 Jedi Starfighter with Hyperdrive Booster Ring (2007); 7660 Naboo N-1 Starfighter with Vulture Droid (2007).
Character Background
R4-P17 was the astromech droid assigned to Obi-Wan Kenobi. She served him through the Clone Wars until her destruction by Buzz Droids during the Battle of Coruscant (Episode III).
Design Notes
This version uses the older 'small-eye' dome print. It is notable for being one of the few droids of the era to move away from light-grey or white bodies toward a vibrant Dark Green.
Similar Minifigures
R2-D2 (sw0028), R5-D4 (sw0142), R4-G0 (sw0477), and the updated R4-P17 (sw0594).
Collectibility
High for 'droid completionists.' Since it is a character-specific droid belonging to a main protagonist (Obi-Wan), it remains a staple for Star Wars collectors.
History
R4-P17 first appeared in LEGO as just a dome on a brick-built body in 2002. This 2007 version (sw0163) was the first time she was represented as a standard 3-part minifigure.
Interesting Facts
In the LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game context, R4-P17 is often treated as a female droid. The 'sw0163' code is specifically for the version with the dark green body, helping differentiate it from R2 units.
Display Suggestions
Best displayed next to a 2007-era Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Delta-7B Starfighter. Use a 2x2 jumper plate for stability as astromechs can be top-heavy.
Modification Potential
Excellent for MOCs. The Dark Green body and legs are useful for creating custom Imperial or Rebel droids with different dome colors (like a Silver or Black dome).
Overall Assessment
A solid, mid-era LEGO Star Wars figure. While lacking the back-printing of modern droids, its unique coloring and ties to a major movie character make it a highly desirable piece for any prequel-era collection.
