sw0005 · Star Wars
Episode I · 1999 (First release alongside The Phantom Menace sets)

Figure ID
sw0005
Theme
Star Wars
Year Released
1999 (First release alongside The Phantom Menace sets)
Rarity
Uncommon; while not rare in a historical sense, this specific variant with the yellow torso was largely phased out in later years in favor of head-only printing.
Head
Classic tan B1 Battle Droid head mold with two black printed eyes; no movable parts.
Torso
Yellow B1 Battle Droid torso (the 'Commander' designation color) with tan arms attached via clip hinges.
Legs
Tan Battle Droid legs, a single molded piece that connects to the torso via a clip at the base.
Accessories
Usually paired with a black megaphone piece (original blaster) or a standard black blaster / SE-14C blaster.
Color Scheme
Tan (Brick Yellow) and Yellow. The yellow denotes his rank as Commander.
Printing Details
Extremely minimal (only the eyes on the head). The rank is indicated by the colored plastic of the torso rather than a print.
Variants
Variations include the SW0184 (one straight arm) and later versions where the yellow rank is printed only on the head rather than using a yellow torso.
Condition Notes
Common wear points include loose arm clips (leading to cracking) and loose neck clips. The yellow plastic can show 'bite marks' or stress whitening more easily than tan.
Estimated Value
Used: $2.00 - $4.00; New/Mint: $5.00 - $8.00. Value remains low due to high production numbers in early sets.
Price (New)
N/A (Available in sets ranging from $10 to $100 in 1999).
Compatible Sets
7141 Naboo Fighter, 7121 Naboo Swamp, 7155 AAT, 7184 Trade Federation MTT.
Character Background
B1 Battle Droids served as the main infantry for the Trade Federation and later the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Yellow-marked droids were programmed with more independent logic to serve as OOM-series commanders.
Design Notes
One of the first 'non-standard' minifigure molds; it uses a mechanical clip system rather than the traditional stud-and-socket system of human minifigures.
Similar Minifigures
sw0001 (Tan Battle Droid), sw0006 (Pilot Droid - Blue), sw0007 (Security Droid - Red).
Collectibility
High for 'army builders' but low for pure investment value. A staple of the 1999-2005 LEGO Star Wars aesthetic.
History
Debuted in the very first wave of LEGO Star Wars. It represented a major departure from the blocky building style of previous 'robot' figures like Droid 1 from Spyrius.
Interesting Facts
In the earliest 1999 sets, droids were often given megaphones as blasters before the dedicated blaster mold was perfected and mass-distributed.
Display Suggestions
Looks best in quantities of 5 or more, ideally positioned on a tan baseplate to simulate a Geonosis or Tatooine environment.
Modification Potential
Arms and heads are easily swappable with other droid colors (Red, Blue, Orange) for custom battalion ranks.
Overall Assessment
A quintessential piece of LEGO history. While simple and fragile, it is the definitive representation of the Prequel Era droids for many long-term collectors.
