Darth Maul - Detailed Skin
sw0384 · Star Wars
The Phantom Menace / Episode I · 2011/2012 (Debuted in set 7961, Sith Infiltrator)

Figure ID
sw0384
Theme
Star Wars
Year Released
2011/2012 (Debuted in set 7961, Sith Infiltrator)
Rarity
Uncommon. While widely produced, this specific version with the updated head printing and no mechanical legs became the standard high-detail Maul for several years before newer torso variants were introduced.
Head
Double-sided printing with a single horn-mold headpiece. The face features much more intricate facial tattoo printing than the 1999 original, including yellow/orange Sith eyes and accurate Zabrak markings. The horns are part of a separate black crown-like piece that sits on top of the head stud.
Torso
Black torso with detailed grey and dark grey robe outlines on both the front and back. Features a sash/belt print. The arms are solid black with black hands. This design significantly modernized the character from the original solid-black torso.
Legs
Standard black legs but with unique light grey outlines mirroring the Sith robe's lower hem. The hip piece is black. This printing is a key identifier for this specific version (sw0384).
Accessories
Trans-red double-bladed lightsaber. The hilt is a metallic silver (flat silver) specialized dual-connector piece. In some sets, this figure also included a black cloth cape.
Color Scheme
A primary palette of Black and Red, with accent colors of Metallic Silver (hilt), Trans-Red (blades), and Yellow (eyes). The robe printing utilizes various shades of Grey.
Printing Details
High-quality pad printing on the head, torso, and legs. This marked a major leap in LEGO Star Wars detail, moving away from 'Classic' styles to line-work that more closely follows actual movie costume seams.
Variants
Variants include the 1999 original (sw0003), the 'Mechanical Legs' version (sw0493), the Shirtless/Tatooine version (sw1230), and the 20th Anniversary version (sw1020). This specific version (sw0384) is defined by its standard legs with robe printing.
Condition Notes
The horn piece is prone to loosening over time. Check the 'neck' of the torso for hairline cracks. The red facial printing is generally durable, but the silver hilt can lose its metallic sheen if handled frequently.
Estimated Value
Used: $12 - $18 USD; New/Mint: $25 - $35 USD. Note that value fluctuates based on whether the original cloth cape and both saber blades are included.
Price (New)
Originally available in Set 7961 (Sith Infiltrator) which retailed for $69.99 USD in 2011. It was also included in several subsequent books and smaller sets (Advent Calendars).
Compatible Sets
7961 Sith Infiltrator (2011), 9509 Star Wars Advent Calendar (2012), and the Sith Infiltrator Microfighter (75076).
Character Background
Darth Maul is the Zabrak Sith Apprentice of Darth Sidious, first appearing in 'Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace'. Known for his double-bladed lightsaber and acrobatic combat style.
Design Notes
This figure was part of the 2011-2012 'Modernization Era' of LEGO Star Wars where many classic 1999 characters received high-detail face and leg prints for the first time.
Similar Minifigures
Savage Opress (sw0316), Darth Sidious (sw0210), and the 20th Anniversary Darth Maul (sw1020).
Collectibility
High. While not the most expensive Maul, it is considered the 'definitive' movie-accurate version for many Episode I collectors due to its balance of detail and classic leg style.
History
Followed the 11-year run of the original sw0003 head mold. This design served as the template for the character's appearance in the LEGO Star Wars video games like the Skywalker Saga.
Interesting Facts
The horn piece used for this figure was a brand new mold when this figure launched, improving upon the 1999 design which used a simple hood or was printed directly on the head.
Display Suggestions
Display alongside a Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Padawan) to recreate the 'Duel of the Fates' scene. Use a transparent stand to pose him mid-jump.
Modification Potential
Excellent for 'purist' customs; the head and horn piece are frequently used to create other Zabrak characters from the Expanded Universe or The Old Republic.
Overall Assessment
A core staple for any Star Wars collection. It represents a significant milestone in LEGO's transition to hyper-detailed minifigures while remaining highly playable. Reliability Score: 9/10.
