Green Goblin - Classic Suited (no headgear)

Figure ID

spd005

Theme

Spider-Man / Super Heroes

Year Released

2002

Rarity

Uncommon to Rare. This was produced during the initial license wave of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies and has been discontinued for over two decades.

Head

Standard yellow head with a smirk/determined expression and black eyebrows. In the set, it was originally covered by a green neck-bracket helmet piece which is missing in the image.

Torso

Green torso with black muscle and armor plating print. It features mechanical/chitinous detailing typical of the 2002 movie suit. Plain green arms with black hands.

Legs

Green legs with black line-art printing on the hips and thighs reflecting the armored texture of the Green Goblin cinematic suit.

Accessories

The figure in the image is shown with a green cloth cape (likely non-purist or from another theme as the original did not include a cape). The original figure came with a Green Goblin mask/helmet (Part 42445) and a purple neck bracket (Part 30624).

Color Scheme

Monochromatic bright green with black printing and yellow skin tone. Black hands provide contrast to the green armor.

Printing Details

Pad printed torso and legs. The detail level is high for 2002, featuring thin black outlines to define musculature and mechanical plating. No back printing was present on this era of minifigure.

Variants

There is a 'Gold Eyes' variant (spd005a) and a version with a neck bracket versus a stud-mounted helmet. This is the standard 2002 version.

Condition Notes

The cape in the photo shows fraying at the edges. Common issues include 'torso cracks' under the arms and fading of the black printing on the legs due to play wear.

Estimated Value

Used (incomplete as shown): $15 - $25 USD. Complete with original helmet/glider: $45 - $60 USD. Values fluctuate based on the condition of the fragile helmet piece.

Price (New)

Originally released in set 1374 ($10.00) and set 4851 ($30.00).

Compatible Sets

1374 Green Goblin (Studios), 4851 Spider-Man and Green Goblin's Origins.

Character Background

Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin, from the 2002 Sam Raimi 'Spider-Man' film. This was LEGO's first attempt at a licensed cinematic Marvel villain.

Design Notes

The use of a specialized mold for the helmet (missing here) was revolutionary for 2002. The yellow head was used because flesh-toned heads were not introduced for licensed themes until 2004.

Similar Minifigures

spd001 Spider-Man, sh008 Green Goblin (Comic version), sh776 Green Goblin (No Way Home version).

Collectibility

High. As one of the first-ever Marvel movie figures, it holds significant nostalgic and historical value for collectors of the original trilogy.

History

Released in the Spring of 2002 alongside the first Spider-Man film. It marked the beginning of LEGO’s partnership with Marvel characters, albeit under the 'Studios' and 'Spider-Man' branding rather than 'Marvel Super Heroes'.

Interesting Facts

The helmet for this figure is notorious for being easily lost. Because the head is yellow, many fans use this torso for custom 'Iron Fist' or 'Hydra Agent' minifigures.

Display Suggestions

Best displayed on a custom Brick-built Goblin Glider. Since the helmet is missing, it can represent Norman Osborn in the 'maskless' balcony scene.

Modification Potential

Excellent. The green armored torso is highly versatile for creating custom forest guards or sci-fi soldiers. Third-party 'purple capes' are often added by fans to match the comic appearance.

Overall Assessment

A seminal piece of LEGO history. While this specific unit is missing its iconic helmet and has an aftermarket cape, the base print remains a classic example of early 2000s licensed design.
