Majisto (Wizard)

Figure ID

cas249

Theme

Castle

Year Released

1997-1998 (Context: Part of the late 90s Castle era)

Rarity

Uncommon. While Majisto appeared in several sets, the star-patterned robe/hat variant is specific to later sets in the 90s compared to the earlier 1993 plain version, making it more sought after by collectors of that specific design era.

Head

Classic LEGO yellow head with black eyes, white pupils and gray bushy eyebrows. It is topped with a blue conical wizard hat featuring yellow crescent moon and silver star printing. A large, white flowing beard piece (part x133) is worn over the neck peg.

Torso

Blue torso with printing of a yellow moon, silver stars, and a rope belt. It features blue arms and yellow hands. The design is simple but iconic of the aesthetic shift towards more detailed printing in the mid-to-late 90s.

Legs

Blue 2x2x2 slope brick (the 'dress' or 'robe' piece) with silver stars, yellow crescent moons, and a printed golden-yellow rope pouch/belt detail that continues from the torso design.

Accessories

Includes a purple cloth cape with silver star patterns (note: the cape in the image appears slightly frayed at the edges). This figure usually carries a plastic glow-in-the-dark wand or a brown staff; however, the wand is missing from the figure pictured.

Color Scheme

A primary palette of bright blue and yellow (skin/moons), accented by metallic silver (stars) and a contrasting deep purple (cape).

Printing Details

Pad printing on the front of the hat, torso, and slope brick. The silver stars have a subtle metallic sheen. There is no back printing on the torso, which was standard for the era.

Variants

The original Majisto (1993) had a plain blue hat and torso with no stars. This 1997 version (item cas249) is the 'Star and Moon' decorated version. A modern version was released in 2023 for a Gift with Purchase (GWP) set.

Condition Notes

The purple star cape is highly prone to fraying and creasing (as seen here). The silver star printing on the plastic can rub off over time with play. Check for cracks in the torso sides/armpits and ensure the 'tail' of the beard isn't bent.

Estimated Value

Used (Complete with cape/accessories): $15 - $25 USD. In the condition shown (frayed cape, missing wand): $10 - $14 USD.

Price (New)

Originally included in sets ranging from $5 to $50 USD. For example, he appeared in the 6027 Bat Lord's Catapult ($5.00) and 6097 Night Lord's Castle ($50.00).

Compatible Sets

Appears in 6097 Night Lord's Castle (1997), 6027 Bat Lord's Catapult (1997), and 6028/6029 Treasure Cart (1998).

Character Background

Majisto is one of LEGO's first named characters with a recurring role. In Castle lore, he is a powerful wizard who initially aided the Dragon Masters but later appeared in Fright Knights sets. He is often associated with magic, dragons, and the early fantasy elements of the theme.

Design Notes

This version represents a more whimsical, 'high fantasy' approach than the earlier versions. The use of the slope brick for legs was the standard way LEGO represented robes before the advent of the modern dress element.

Similar Minifigures

Early Majisto (cas115), Vitruvius from The LEGO Movie, and the 2023 Majisto remake (cas603).

Collectibility

High. He is a nostalgic icon for childhood collectors of the 1990s. While not 'gold-brick' expensive, he is a centerpiece of any retro Castle collection.

History

First appearing in 1993, Majisto defined the 'LEGO Wizard' archetype. This 1997 update added the 'magic' printing to distinguish him from earlier, plainer versions, coinciding with the Fright Knights fantasy expansion.

Interesting Facts

Despite being a 'good' wizard, he was often packaged with the Fright Knights, who were arguably the 'bad guys' of that era's storyline, leading to many fan theories about his shifting allegiances.

Display Suggestions

Display alongside a dragon or inside a stone-gray tower MOC. Since the cape is fragile, keep it out of direct sunlight to prevent the purple fabric from fading to a dull gray.

Modification Potential

Excellent for classic 'Mage' MOCs. The slope-brick base can be swapped for blue legs if you want a 'traveling' wizard look, though the base printing is hard to match.

Overall Assessment

A quintessential 90s classic. Even with the fraying on the cape, this is a beautiful example of transition-era LEGO design where simple shapes met more decorative printing. A must-have for Castle enthusiasts.
