Skales

Figure ID

njo040

Theme

Ninjago

Year Released

2012 (First Wave of Ninjago Snakes)

Rarity

Uncommon / Rare (Discontinued). Skales was only available in three sets between 2012 and 2014, and his unique head mold was never reused for other characters, making him a specific target for collectors.

Head

Unique molded head. Dark blue with characteristic cobra-style neck hood. Features red hypnotic spiral eyes, white fangs, and lime green/yellow scale patterns. This is a one-piece molded head/headgear combo unique to the character.

Torso

White torso with scale printing. Features a dark blue chest section with lime green/yellow 'underbelly' scales. The sides of the torso have grey swirl patterns representing the Hypnobrai tribe's hypnotic motifs. The back continues the blue scale pattern.

Legs

Standard White legs (note: the provided image is missing the leg assembly and arms). The complete figure features a dark blue hip piece and white legs with line printing that continues the Hypnobrai scale aesthetic.

Accessories

Usually paired with a Hypnobrai Staff (gold with a transparent blue printed tile) or a snake-themed spear. The staff is a key accessory as it represents the leadership of the tribe.

Color Scheme

A striking contrast of White and Dark Blue, accented with metallic/lime yellow for scales and vibrant red for the eyes.

Printing Details

High-quality pad printing. The torso features intricate line work for the hypnotic swirls. The head mold has precise application on the eyes and fangs, which was technologically advanced for 2012.

Variants

This is the primary version (njo040). A variation with a long snake tail instead of legs exists in set 9446 (njo040). There are also later 'Legacy' versions, but this 2012 mold remains the most iconic.

Condition Notes

The white plastic of the torso is prone to yellowing if exposed to sunlight. The thin printing on the fangs can rub off with play. Common stress marks can appear on the torso-leg connection points.

Estimated Value

Used (Complete): $18 - $25 USD; New/Sealed: $45 - $60 USD. Individual Head: $8-$12. Individual Torso: $5-$8. Note: The value decreases significantly if missing arms and legs, as seen in the photo.

N/A (Individual figure). Originally found in sets ranging from $19.99 (9441) to $79.99 (9450).

Compatible Sets

9441 Kai's Blade Cycle (2012), 9446 Destiny's Bounty (2012), 9450 Epic Dragon Battle (2012).

Character Background

Skales is the General of the Hypnobrai tribe. He rose to power by defeating Slithraa in a Pit Fight using his hypnotic gaze. He is a primary antagonist in the early seasons of Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu.

Design Notes

The Serpentine represent a milestone in LEGO design where custom-molded heads were used to create non-humanoid shapes, departing from standard minifigure heads with hats.

Similar Minifigures

Slithraa (njo039), Fangtom (njo049), Skalidor (njo067), and Pythor P. Chumsworth (njo041).

Collectibility

High. The 2012 Serpentine generals are highly sought after by Ninjago completionists. As an iconic villain, Skales maintains steady value and demand.

History

Introduced in the debut year of the Serpentine storyline. This era marked Ninjago's transition from a limited run to a permanent LEGO staple.

Interesting Facts

Despite being a villain, Skales eventually becomes a pacifist and leads his tribe into the sewers to avoid further conflict with surface-dwellers.

Display Suggestions

Best displayed on a dark grey or black baseplate to make the white torso 'pop'. Pair with his Golden Staff and other Serpentine Generals.

Modification Potential

The head piece is excellent for alien MOCs or custom Cthulhu-inspired builds. The white torso is versatile for tribal or ice-themed custom characters.

Overall Assessment

A standout figure from the Ninjago 'Golden Age'. While the example in the image is missing limbs and legs (incomplete), the head and torso are the most valuable parts of the figure.
