Fire Ninja (Kai) - Classic Ninja
cas051 · Castle
Ninja · 1998

Figure ID
cas051
Theme
Castle
Year Released
1998
Rarity
Uncommon. While the Red Ninja appeared in several sets during the Ninja sub-theme run from 1998-1999, original figures in good condition are becoming harder to find due to the age of the plastic and the popularity of the Red Ninja archetype.
Head
Yellow head with classic black eyes, thin eyebrows, and a 'Ninja headband' print in black with gold accents and a small knot in the back. Unlike modern Ninjago, this represents the 90s era 'stoic' ninja face.
Torso
Red torso with black and gold printing. Features a traditional wrapped gi design with a gold chainmail/mesh triangle at the neck, a brown hilt of a hidden dagger tucked into the belt, and a gold 'shuriken' symbol or fold detail on the lower left.
Legs
Plain Red legs with a plain red hip piece. No printing was present on the legs for this specific 1998 version.
Accessories
Missing in image. Originally would have included a Red Ninja Wrap (headgear/mask piece) and usually came with a Chrome Silver Katana or a black spear/halberd depending on the specific set.
Color Scheme
Primary Red with Yellow skin tones. Accents include Black, Gold, and Brown in the torso print. This color scheme directly preceded the modern Kai character from Ninjago.
Printing Details
Pad printed. Features a simple but effective 90s aesthetic. Single-sided head printing and single-sided torso printing (no back printing, which was standard for the era).
Variants
There are numerous similar ninjas from this era in different colors (Black, White, Blue, Grey). A variant exists with a different face print (cas050) and later versions in the early 2000s 'Knights Kingdom' era or 'Ninja Go' (2011) evolved the design significantly.
Condition Notes
Common wear includes 'gold' rubbing off the torso print, torso cracks at the armpits, and bite marks on the head stud. The red plastic from this era is relatively stable but can fade if exposed to UV.
Estimated Value
Used (incomplete as shown): $4.00 - $7.00 USD. Used (complete with mask/sword): $12.00 - $18.00 USD. Value is heavily dictated by the presence of the original red ninja wrap headgear.
Price (New)
N/A (Individual figure). Originally available in sets ranging from $3.00 (6013 Samurai Cart) to $79.00 (6093 Flying Ninja's Fortress).
Compatible Sets
6033 Treasure Chest, 1187 Glider, 3052 Ninja Fire Fortress, 6088 Robber's Retreat, 6089 Stone Tower Bridge, 6093 Flying Ninja's Fortress.
Character Background
This figure is the spiritual precursor to Ninjago's Kai. In the 1998 Ninja theme, red ninjas were typically part of the 'good' faction led by the Shogun, fighting against the black-clad bandits or the Robber Chief's forces.
Design Notes
The torso highlights the transition period of LEGO design where gold ink became more common. The hidden dagger print was a high-detail feature for 1998.
Similar Minifigures
White Ninja (cas052), Grey Ninja (cas054), Modern Ninjago Kai (njo001), Classic Black Ninja (cas013).
Collectibility
High for '90s kids' and Castle theme completionists. It represents a pivotal moment when LEGO shifted from European Middle Ages to Eastern/Japanese-inspired Castle sub-themes.
History
Launched in 1998 to replace the Fright Knights sub-theme. This figure marks the first time LEGO produced dedicated Ninja-themed sets, which eventually paved the way for the massive success of Ninjago 13 years later.
Interesting Facts
The red ninja wrap (mask) used for this figure was a brand new mold in 1998 and is still one of the most iconic headgear pieces in LEGO history.
Display Suggestions
Best displayed in a 1998-era 'Castle Ninja' lineup or alongside a modern Ninjago Kai to show the 25-year evolution of the character archetype.
Modification Potential
Excellent for 'Heritage' MOCs. Many collectors swap the head for modern Ninjago expressions while keeping the vintage torso for a 'Classic Kai' look.
Overall Assessment
A quintessential piece of LEGO history. While this specific unit is missing its iconic mask and weapons, the torso and head printing appear to be in decent 'played-with' condition. A must-have for historical theme collectors.
