Rarity
Uncommon. While widely available in 2012, this version is no longer in production and specific pieces like the Scythe and the ZX hood remain iconic for collectors.
Head
Yellow head with standard Cole expression: bushy black eyebrows and a focused, frowning expression. This version is a single-sided head consistent with the early Ninjago era.
Torso
Black torso with Cole's ZX kimono pattern. The print features a large tan/gold dragon head on the right side and a silver/grey belt (obi) with a dark grey knot. The back features a continuation of the dragon symbols and a space for a katana holder (not seen attached in image).
Legs
Black legs with grey hip joint. The printing includes a tan/gold dragon tail winding down the right leg and dark grey knee wraps.
Accessories
The figure is holding the 'Scythe of Quakes', one of the four Golden Weapons. It consists of a Pearl Gold Dragon Sword blade (part 98139) attached to a handle. The figure should also technically include a black ZX hood and a back-mounted armor piece with katana slots, though only the hood is prominent in the image.
Color Scheme
Primary: Black. Accents: Pearl Gold, Tan, and Slate Grey. This color palette represents the Earth element associated with Cole.
Printing Details
Pad-printed on high-quality ABS plastic. Features 360-degree integration where the dragon graphic flows from the torso down to the legs. Alignment on this specific era was generally high, though leg printing can sometimes be slightly off-center.
Variants
Cole has many variants (Kendo, Kimono, DX, RX, Legacy). This specific ZX version also appeared in a 'Kimono' variant in 2013 with more ornate gold printing. This 2012 version is the debut of the ZX armor style.
Condition Notes
Common wear points include 'silvering' or fading of the tan dragon print on the torso. The Scythe of Quakes handle (if it's a brown bar) often shows teeth marks or stress whitening. Check for cracks in the heels or under the arms.
Estimated Value
$5.00 - $12.00 USD (Used/Complete). Values vary based on the inclusion of the Golden Scythe and the back armor piece. New/Sealed in polybag can fetch $20-$30.
Price (New)
Originally available in sets ranging from $9.99 (9441) up to $119.99 (9450). Also available in a magnet set and boosters for approximately $4.99.
Compatible Sets
70502 Cole's Earth Driller, 9444 Cole's Tread Assault, 9441 Kai's Blade Cycle, 9551 Cole ZX Booster Pack, and 850442 Ninjago Accessory Set.
Character Background
Cole is the Master of Earth and the original leader of the Ninja team. Known for his physical strength and love of cake, he was recruited by Master Wu to protect the Golden Weapons. This ZX (Zenith) form represents his increased power during the battle against the Serpentine.
Design Notes
The ZX wave introduced the wrap-around hood piece (part 98133), which became a staple for Ninjago. The printing is much more detailed than the 'Pilot' or 'DX' versions, moving toward a more modern LEGO aesthetic.
Similar Minifigures
Kai ZX (njo031), Jay ZX (njo034), Zane ZX (njo032). These all share the same armor design but in different elemental colors.
Collectibility
High for Ninjago fans. The 'Rise of the Snakes' era is considered the 'Golden Age' of Ninjago, and completing a set of the four Ninja in ZX armor is a primary goal for many collectors.
History
Released as part of the second wave of Ninjago. This version helped cement the 'elemental colors' (red, blue, white, black) that have defined the brand for over a decade.
Interesting Facts
The Scythe of Quakes in this set uses the same mold as the head of a dragon. In early Ninjago lore, this weapon was so heavy and powerful only Cole could wield it properly.
Display Suggestions
Display alongside the other three original Ninja (Kai, Jay, Zane) in their ZX armor. Using a black or grey baseplate with rock elements enhances the 'Earth' theme.
Modification Potential
Excellent for 'purist' customs. The legs and torso are versatile for any black-clad rogue, ninja, or mercenary character.
Overall Assessment
A quintessential Ninjago minifigure. While not the rarest figure in the theme, it is a sturdy, well-designed piece of LEGO history that represents a peak era of character design. Rating: 8/10 for any modern LEGO collector.
