Iron Man Mark 42 (MK42)

Figure ID

sh065

Theme

Marvel Super Heroes

Year Released

2013 (Released as part of the first Marvel movie wave for Iron Man 3)

Rarity

Uncommon. While not a limited-edition exclusive, it originated in sets that are now retired (11+ years old), and this specific armor suit remains highly desirable for collectors completing the 'Hall of Armor'.

Head

Double-sided light-flesh head featuring Tony Stark's signature goatee. One side has a determined scowl, the other a panicked expression. The figure in the image is missing its signature flip-up faceplate helmet.

Torso

Dark red torso with intricate gold and silver printing. Features the Arc Reactor in silver/light blue and segmented armor plating. Dark red arms and hands.

Legs

Dark red legs with extensive gold and silver printing on the hips and front of the legs, continuing the MK42 armor plating pattern down to the shins.

Accessories

Originally included a two-part dark red helmet (hinged) with a gold faceplate (part 2446/90605). The figure in the image is currently missing these vital accessories.

Color Scheme

A 'reverse' color scheme compared to standard Iron Man suits: primarily dark red with heavy gold plating and silver accents. It is designed to match the Mark 42 'Prodigal Son' suit from the film.

Printing Details

High-quality pad printing on the head (dual-sided), torso (front/back), and legs (front). The detail is dense, featuring mechanical inner-workings and plate seams common to the 2013-2015 Marvel era.

Variants

This specific variant (sh065) is characterized by the gold-heavy leg and torso printing. It differs from the Mark 6, Mark 7, and Mark 17 (Heartbreaker) released in the same window which used different color balances.

Condition Notes

Main concern is the missing helmet/faceplate. Common wear includes silvering (scratches) on the gold leg printing and hairline cracks in the dark red torso (a common issue with older dark red plastic).

Estimated Value

Used (Complete): $25-$35 USD. Used (Incomplete as pictured, missing helmet): $10-$15 USD. The helmet and gold faceplate account for a significant portion of the value.

Price (New)

Originally available in sets ranging from $20.00 (76006) to $39.99 (76007).

Compatible Sets

76006: Iron Man: Extremis Sea Port Battle (2013), 76007: Iron Man: Malibu Mansion Attack (2013), and 30167: Iron Man vs. Fighting Drone (Polybag).

Character Background

Tony Stark's 42nd suit, known for its autonomous prehensile propulsion system, allowing individual parts to fly onto Stark's body. It was the primary suit used in the movie Iron Man 3.

Design Notes

This was one of the early 'detailed' Iron Man figures. While later versions used more metallic paint, this 2013 version used flat gold ink which has a unique 'matte' collector feel.

Similar Minifigures

Iron Man Mark 6 (sh015), Mark 7 (sh036), Mark 17 Heartbreaker (sh073), and the Silver Centurion (sh232).

Collectibility

High. The Mark 42 is an iconic suit in the MCU. Collectors who own the 'Iron Man Hall of Armor' sets often seek this specific version to fill out their displays.

History

Launched during the height of the MCU Phase 2, this figure represented a shift in LEGO design toward more screen-accurate armor detailing rather than stylized comic looks.

Interesting Facts

Despite being the 'primary' suit for the film, the Mark 42 is actually one of the most damaged and 'broken' suits in the movie, which is ironically translated here in a pristine print.

Display Suggestions

Ideal for a Hall of Armor MOC or placed on a clear trans-light-blue stand to simulate the 'pieces flying' effect. Missing helmet should be replaced to maximize display value.

Modification Potential

Excellent for purist customs; the legs and torso are frequently used to create custom versions of other gold-heavy Stark armors or futuristic robots.

Overall Assessment

A standout figure from the 2013 Marvel line. While the example in the image is incomplete, the torso and leg prints appear to be in good condition. Replacing the helmet is highly recommended for any collector.
