Year Released

2012: Theoden debuted in the set 9474 The Battle of Helm's Deep. This was a peak year for LEGO's licensed themes, bringing Peter Jackson's trilogy to life with high-detail printing and specialized molds like the Rohan helmet.

Rarity

Rare: Exclusively found in the Battle of Helm's Deep set, which has been retired for over a decade. Due to the limited run of the original Lord of the Rings line and high demand for Rohan characters, he is difficult to find in pristine condition.

Head

Yellow skin tone with a double-sided print: one side featuring a stern look and the other a battle-ready angry expression. He features a printed reddish-brown beard and mustache. The helmet is a unique Pearl Gold mold specific to the Rohirrim.

Torso

Dark Stone Grey (Dark Bluish Gray) torso with intricate scale mail printing on the front and back. The design includes a belt with a Rohirrim buckle and detailed metallic highlights to simulate metal armor. The arms are plain Dark Stone Grey with light grey hands.

Legs

Dark Stone Grey legs with black and silver printing at the toes to represent boots and the continuation of the scale mail tunic. The hip piece is the same base color.

Accessories

Commonly equipped with a silver longsword and a circular Rohan shield (not pictured in all versions of the image but standard to the character). The pearl gold helmet is his most iconic accessory. The figure also frequently includes a dark green cape in its retail set configuration.

Color Scheme

Primary colors are Dark Bluish Gray (armor) and Pearl Gold (helmet). Secondary accents include black, silver, and yellow skin tones. The color palette is designed to reflect the gritty, medieval aesthetic of the Rohan kingdom.

Printing Details

High-quality pad printing. The scale mail pattern is exceptionally dense and accurately aligned across the torso and hips. The facial printing captures the character's aging features and likeness to Bernard Hill well for the 2012 era.

Variants

This is the armored version. A second version of Theoden exists (lor109) from 2023, but it features significantly different printing, flesh-toned skin, and updated hair/helmet molds. This 2012 yellow-skin version is the original.

Condition Notes

Look for stress marks on the gold helmet's cheek guards. The metallic silver printing on the torso can rub off with heavy play. Yellowing is less of an issue on grey plastic, but the yellow head can fade if exposed to UV light.

Estimated Value

Used: $70.00 - $95.00 | New/Mint: $120.00+. Prices fluctuate based on the inclusion of the cape and the condition of the fragile pearl gold helmet.

Price (New)

Set 9474 (The Battle of Helm's Deep) originally retailed for $129.99 USD in 2012. Theoden was one of 8 minifigures included in that set.

Character Background

King Theoden of Rohan is a central figure in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Initially corrupted by Saruman through Grima Wormtongue, he is restored by Gandalf and leads his people to victory at Helm's Deep and later the Pelennor Fields.

Design Notes

The helmet mold is a standout piece of LEGO engineering, capturing the Norse-inspired aesthetic of Rohan perfectly. The decision to use yellow skin in 2012 was a legacy choice for the theme before moving toward flesh-toned licensed figures (like later Hobbit/LOTR waves).

Similar Minifigures

Eomer (lor011), Rohan Soldier (lor009), and the newer flesh-toned King Theoden (lor109) from the 2023 Rivendell set.

Collectibility

Very High. Lord of the Rings collectors consider the Helm's Deep set a 'holy grail.' As Rohan has not been revisited in a standard play-scale set recently, Theoden remains a high-value centerpiece for any Middle-earth collection.

History

Released during the first wave of LOTR sets. It marked the transition of LEGO into more complex, adult-oriented licensed fantasy themes. It was the first time the King of Rohan was ever officially produced in brick form.

Interesting Facts

The printing on the legs to represent the bottom of the surcoat was quite advanced for a non-CMF figure in 2012. Collectors often swap the yellow head for a flesh-toned one to match modern sets, though this drastically reduces its 'purist' value.

Display Suggestions

Display on a brown or grey baseplate beside Eomer and Aragorn. He looks best on a white or light grey horse (the set included a white horse for him) to recreate the charge from the keep.

Modification Potential

Great for purist customs; the armor can be used for generic high-fantasy knights. The gold helmet is highly sought after for MOC (My Own Creation) builders creating Rohan armies.

Overall Assessment

An iconic, high-value minifigure with exceptional detailing. Despite the old-style yellow skin, the armor and helmet remain some of the best medieval-style designs LEGO has ever produced. Rating: 9/10.
