Thorin Oakenshield - Lake-town Outfit

Figure ID

lor084

Theme

The Hobbit / The Lord of the Rings

Year Released

2013 - Released as part of the second wave of The Hobbit sets following the premiere of the second film.

Rarity

Rare. This version of Thorin was exclusive to a single set which has long been retired, making him highly sought after by Tolkien fans.

Head

Light Flesh dual-sided head: one side features a determined/serious expression, the other a grumpy/angry scowl. Includes a white/light grey hair piece (part 11603) and printed silver/grey facial hair/beard.

Torso

Dark Brown torso with a sand blue tunic and reddish brown coat print. Details include a leather strap across the chest with a silver buckle and a small leather pouch at the waist.

Legs

Dark Tan legs with front printing continuing the dark brown coat tails and sand blue tunic/belt detail. Does not feature side or back leg printing.

Accessories

In the original set, he included Orcrist (the Elven sword) in pearl light gray and a dark brown hairpiece with a molded crown. In the provided image, he is missing his sword and crown accessory.

Color Scheme

Earth-toned palette consisting of Dark Brown, Sand Blue, and Dark Tan, accented with silver printing and light flesh skin tones.

Printing Details

High-quality pad printing typical of the 2013-2015 era. Printing spans the head (dual-sided), torso (front and back), and the front of the legs/hips.

Variants

There are four primary versions of Thorin: the 'Casual' travel version (lor034), this Lake-town version (lor084), the gold-armored version (lor094), and a promotional younger version (lor068).

Condition Notes

Look for silver print wear on the belt buckle and strap. The white hair piece is prone to minor scuffs that show dirt. Check for neck cracks and 'heel' cracks on the back of the legs.

Estimated Value

Used: $25.00 - $35.00 USD; New/Mint: $45.00+ USD. The value has remained stable but trends upward as Lord of the Rings sets increase in secondary market value.

Price (New)

Originally available in set 79013, which retailed for $49.99 USD in 2013.

Compatible Sets

79013 Lake-town Chase (2013).

Character Background

Thorin II Oakenshield, son of Thráin, is the leader of the Company of Dwarves seeking to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug. This version represents his look while in Esgaroth (Lake-town).

Design Notes

This figure is notable for featuring Thorin's 'disguise' or civilian clothing rather than his signature travel furs or battle armor, utilizing the 2013 hair mold with integrated silver streaks.

Similar Minifigures

Bard the Bowman (lor083), Lake-town Guard (lor085), and other members of Thorin's company like Balin or Dwalin.

Collectibility

High. As a core protagonist of the trilogy in a unique outfit, he is a primary target for 'full cast' collectors of the Middle-earth line.

History

Part of LEGO's licensing deal for The Hobbit trilogy (2012-2014); this specific version was a mid-point release between the beginning of the quest and the final battle variants.

Interesting Facts

Despite being a dwarf, LEGO used standard-sized legs for Thorin in this set to maintain his proportions relative to the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, who uses short legs.

Display Suggestions

Display alongside Bard and the Master of Lake-town in a dockside diorama. Use UV-protected cases as the sand blue and dark tan colors can fade over time with sun exposure.

Modification Potential

The torso and legs are excellent for custom medieval or fantasy 'commoner' MOCs. The hairpiece is highly sought after for creating custom elderly warrior figures.

Overall Assessment

A standout figure from 'The Desolation of Smaug' wave. While missing its original accessories in the photo, the core components are in good condition and remain a staple of any Hobbit collection.
